NFIW condemns President Kovind's decision to appoint former CJI Gogoi as member of the Rajya Sabha

by , 18 Mar 2020

PRESS RELEASE-

NFIW expresses its outrage and alarm upon the appointment of former Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi, to the Rajya Sabha by the President of India. Ranjan Gogoi served as the 46th Chief Justice of India from 3 October 2018 till 17 November 2019.

NFIW believes that with this decision, the President of India has let down the people, especially the women of India, morally and institutionally. While it is not a new happening, of sexual harassers and predators enjoying State patronage, the awarding of loyalty to a certain ideological force of Mr. Gogoi is most certainly vulgar and unacceptable. While occupying the office of the CJI, Mr. Ranjan Gogoi was accused by a Supreme Court woman staffer of sexual harassment in April 2019. Making an absolute mockery of all the principles of natural justice an in-house committee of which Mr. Gogoi was also a part of, probed the allegation and gave himself a clean chit. The SC in- house committee violated many legal rights of the complainant.

Moreover, by this appointment the entire credibility and autonomy of the justice system of the country has been further compromised. This, we fear will cause irreparable impact upon jurisprudence and upon the delivery of justice itself.

This decision by the President of India, will not only raise aspersions on the credibility of the SC, the highest court of India but it is the misuse of the Constitution and constitutional provisions of our country.

Stranded in Iran without essentials, Tamil fishermen’s desperate cry for help

More than 800 Tamil fishermen are trapped in Iran following the Corona virus outbreak. The fishermen have sent over 20 SOS videos, imploring the Indian government to rescue them. It has been 25 days since their plea, the Indian authorities are yet to respond. Even as their basic resources including water and food dwindle each day, the fishermen continue to survive despite all odds. Now, the families of the fishermen have also joined in the appeal to demand help from authorities, hoping someone takes notice of their cries before it is too late.
