Covid-19: Over 27,000 cases in Guj, 580 new cases in one day!

The death toll surged to 1664 and 655 patients recovered on Sunday

As coronavirus cases continued to surge in the country, the state tally of Gujarat crossed the 27,000 mark with over 580 new cases being reported just on Sunday, June 21, the highest reported in a single day according to The Indian Express. While 273 cases were reported from Ahmedabad, the second highest number came in from Surat where 176 cases were reported. Out of the 27,317 cases reported from the state, Ahmedabad accounts for 18,837, Surat accounts for 3,233 cases and Vadodara accounts for 1867 cases.

The recovery rate has touched 70.86 percent while the mortality rate stands at 6.09% – the highest in the country. The current active cases across the state stand at 6,296 while the death toll reached 1,667 as 25 more succumbed to the virus. Ahmedabad reported 20 deaths, Surat reported 3, while Aravalli and Chhota Udaipur reported 1 each. The death toll in Ahmedabad rose to 1,332. As many as 655 patients across the state had recovered and returned home. 

A day after the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation added 30 new micro-containment zones to the list, the West Zone consisting of areas like Navrangpura, Naranpura, Paldi, Ambavadi and Sabarmati among others reported the highest of 836 active cases on Sunday. This zone has 1,831 micro-containment zones within it. The North Zone which has 268 micro containment zones within it and consists of areas like Sardarnagar, Nobalnagar, Naroda, Kubernagar and Nava Naroda among others reported the second highest of 730 cases. With 819 micro-containment zones under it, the East Zone which consists of areas like Amraiwadi, Bapunagar, Gomatipur, Mahavirnagar, Rajpur and Vastral among others reported 474 cases. The South Zone which has 200 micro-containment zones consisting of Vatva, Maninagar, Kankaria, Beherampura, Ghodasar, Indrapuri, etc. reported 432 cases and the Central Zone consisting of Asarwa, Khadia, Madhupura, Girdharnagar, Shahpur and Raikhad among others reported 380 cases.

The Indian Express (IE) also reported that an official of the General Administration Department (GAD) at the secretariat in Gandhinagar was one among the fresh cases. Principal Secretary, GAD, Kamal Dayani told IE that an officer of the Protocol section had tested positive for the virus and that his team members were asked to not come to office for a few days, apart from mentioning that the office would be sanitized soon. Dr. Kalpesh Goswami, Medical Officer Health at the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation also told IE that the official had been admitted at a private hospital in the Gandhinagar Urban Development Area and three of his family members had been asked to quarantine at home.

As on June 21, Gujarat had conducted a total of 324,874 tests throughout the state. Out of the total 223,450 people quarantined in the state, 219,465 were under home quarantine and 3,985 were under institutional quarantine.
