101 die in Assam floods, say ASDMA on Thursday

Silchar town still in deep waters, submerged in water for four days

The flood situation in Assam remained grim by June 23, 2022 across the border in Bangladesh. Reports from syndicated feed said that over 54.5 lakh people are still affected and 12 more deaths have been reported. This brings the death toll caused by floods to 101 deaths since mid-May.

Brahmaputra and Barak rivers and their tributaries continue to flood most districts and with vast tracts of land inundated in 32 out of 35 districts. Overall, 54,57,601 people were affected across districts. While the water has receded in some areas, the Silchar region is still a point of concern.

Particularly, Barak Valley districts like Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj were severely hit by the rising water of Barak and Kushiara rivers. According to early reports, the Silchar town has been submerged for the last four days due to a breach in an embankment.

So far, 3,658 persons were evacuated using 276 boats by the National and State Disaster Response Forces and other agencies. More than 14,500 people who were marooned during this predicament have been rescued by the NDRF in 12 flood-affected districts.

While the NDRF’s first Battalion Disaster Response Force deployed over 70 boats and 400 men in the heavily flooded districts, eight more teams from other battalions with 207 personnel were airlifted to Silchar since June 21. Rescue and relief operations are being conducted by NDRF in Kamrup, Kamrup Rural, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Bajali, Hojai, Nalbari, Darang, Tamulpur, Nagaon, Udalguri, and Cachar.

Moreover, the Central Water Commission (CWC) bulletin said the Kopili river is flowing above the danger level at Kampur in Nagaon district, Disang river in Sivasagar, Brahmaputra at Nimatighat, Tezpur, Goalpara and Dhubri, Barak river at Karimganj, Cachar and Hailakandi district and Kushiara at Karimganj.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on Thursday, the worst affected districts are Barpeta where 11,29,390 people are affected, followed by Kamrup with 7,89,496 people, Dhubri with 5,97,153 people and Nagaon with 5,03,450 people.

Urban flooding was reported from Cachar, Darrang, Goalpara, Karimganj and Morigaon. Landslides were reported from Bethany village in Dima Hasao district and 19 houses were damaged at various locations at Barthal in Karimganj. Large scale erosion was also reported from Baksa, Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nalbari and Udalguri, said the ASDMA.
