The disappearance of JNU student, Najeeb Ahmad, now in its 41st day, has been one of the stories to drop off the national radar after the government’s move to abruptly, without proper consultation, de-monetize Rs 500 and Rs 1000 Rs Notes. Huge number of students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) along with other universities staged a protest outside the Delhi Police Headquarters. The protest was held for the inaction to trace a student of the university who has been missing from the campus for two weeks a few days ago.
A student of School of Biotechnology and a native of Badaun in Uttar Pradesh, Najeeb Ahmed (27), went missing on October 15 following a brawl with the members of ABVP, BJP’s students’ wing, the night before, in the campus.
The students of the Jawaharlal Nehru Students’ Union (JNUSU), accompanied by fellow students, belonging to other universities, staged a demonstration outside the police ehadquarters and later, a delegation met Joint Commissioner, South-East Range, RP Upadhyay and submitted a memorandum of demands to him.
Meanwhile, at the recent protests, the mothers of Hyderabad student Rohit Vemula and missing JNU student Najeeb sat together at the Jantar Mantar protests last Monday evening. No news yet of Najeeb, a victim of goons allegedly associated with the Sangh parivar’s Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP)
“They wanted to know about the status of the investigation and what were we doing for the immediate recovery of Najeeb. We told them it was a high-priority case for us and almost 100 personnel, split into various teams, were working on it. The students offered to help us in conducting a search of the jungle which we told them we had already done with the JNU administration officials,” Upadhyay told the media.
The administration of JNU has been witnessing the protest by the JNUSU after Najeeb’s disappearance from campus. The students have alleged inaction on part of the administration.
The Union Home Ministry had ordered Delhi Police to form a special investigation team (SIT) to trace the Najeeb.
