The Uttar Pradesh government issued a third recovery order on Tuesday, looking at recovering more than Rs. 1.5 crore from 57 people as a compensation for the damage caused to property in the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests that took a violent turn in Lucknow on December 19, 2019, the Economic Times reported.
According to the order issued by the Additional District Magistrate, Vishwa Bhushan Mishra, 10 people from the Thakurganj area of old Lucknow, as well as six people from Kaiserbagh have been identified to pay Rs. 67.74 lakh and Rs. 1.75 lakh respectively.
Prior to this, 13 people had been served notices for damages in the Khadra locality of the city and asked to pay up Rs. 22 lakh. For allegedly destroying buses, media vans and motorcycles in Parivartan Chowk, 28 people were asked to pay up Rs. 64.37 lakh.
According to ET, the people who were singled out to pay up were shortlisted on the basis of “police reports, replies by the accused and testimonies presented by both sides.” They have been given 30 days to pay the amount, failing which their properties will be confiscated.
After the anti-CAA protests turned violent in the state, 21 people lost their lives. UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had said that properties of those involve in the violence would be seized and auctioned to compensate destruction of public and private assets during the protests over the amended citizenship law. He had maintained his stand saying that no protester was killed in police firing. “The rioters were killed by rioters,” he had said and added that “revenge will be taken” against those who indulged in the protests.
In December, reportedly, 295 people in the districts of Lucknow, Kanpur, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Sambhal, Rampur, Bijnor and Bulandshahr had reportedly received notices in connection with property damage worth at least Rs 1.9 crore.
