By its actions the BJP government has made it clear that public sentiment of dissent and their angry voices are not going to be paid heed. This indicates that dissent of the people who elected the government is being given no room in a democratically elected government.
The Deccan Herald reported that as per government sources, the district magistrates (DMs) have been directed to identify the migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, who have been living in their districts. A senior official said that while no written orders have been issued, the state’s home department has orally instructed the DMs.
This is being done despite the fact that CAA has not yet been notified by the Centre in the gazette for its date of implementation or date from which the law it to be operational.
The officials are expected to prepare a list of minorities from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh who could be eligible for citizenship under CAA, which will then be forwarded to the central Home Ministry. The state government estimates that migrants eligible for citizenship under CAA could be more in number in the districts, including Rampur, Ghaziabad, Shahjahanpur, Lucknow and some others.
Naturally, the Ministry will also be informed about the “illegal Muslim migrants” to enable their deportation to their countries of origin.
In the police violence unleashed in Uttar Pradesh, around 20 people died and the UP Police has claimed responsibility over only one death after initially denying that they ever fired at the protestors.
