The Bharatiya Janata Party is suddenly wary of its electoral prospects in Uttar Pradesh. Perhaps the most telling move that seems to justify the strong murmurings in the Samajwadi camp has come from the BJP government at the centre. Even as BJP and Congress come together to predict the Samajwadi party’s doom, Akhilesh Yadav seems to be rising from strength to strength insofar as public opinion is concerned. And from a hesitant leader, he has emerged very decisively from his father’s shadows to strike out without the baggage of goons and corruption that the party had come to carry. There might be a coalition emerging, with congress and RLD and Akhilesh Yadav. If all three come together, they will have larger appeal to the younger generation and hence get more votes. The other side of the picture is of Mayawati. She has an intact vote bank and is eyeing the Muslim and Dalit votes. BJP is as always continuing with communal polarizing, sending RSS cadres for mass scale door to door for campaigning. While they project BJP as the only pro development party, their ‘growth’ claims have been proved to be hollow.
