Alwar Gangrape Case: NHRC Issues Notice to State for Police Inaction; All Five Accused Arrested

Alwar: Rajasthan police arrested all the five accused in the Alwar Gangrape case even as the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued a notice to the state government for the alleged inaction by the police.

NHRC

NHRC sent the notice on Wednesday asking the state government to reply within six weeks for its “slow response” in the case. NHRC said that if the media reports and the victim’s allegations that the police refused to take action till May 6, due to elections, are true then it amounts to gross violations of human rights of the victim and her husband.

Accordingly, it has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, Rajasthan “calling for a report in the matter, within six weeks including action taken against the guilty and relief/ counselling provided to the victim woman,” the NHRC said in a release.

“The Commission would also like to know whether provisions of the SC/ST Act, 1995 have been applied in this case for action against the guilty and statutory relief to the victim,” it added.

While the protestors, the NHRC and the opposition BJP were slamming the Congress-led state government for its nonchalant attitude towards this heinous crime, the police have managed to arrest all the five accused. The arrested accused have been identified as – Indraraj Gurjar, Ashok, Hansraj Gurjar, Mukesh Gurjar (Chotelal) and Mahesh Gurjar. Hansraj Gurjar is the latest to be held.

The dreadful incident occurred on April 26 when the victim, a 18-year old Dalit woman, was going to Taal Vriksha – a hot water spring believed to hold religious importance – with her husband on a motorbike. FIR was registered on May 2 at the Ghazi police station after the video of the incident went viral on social media. Victim’s husband alleged that had the police acted immediately, the video wouldn’t have gone viral. But they refused to take their complain citing a busy schedule due to elections on May 6.

Taking action in the case, the state government on Tuesday removed Alwar SP Rajeev Pachar and the station house officer of Thana Ghazi police station .

On Tuesday, minister of state for women and child development department (independent charge) Mamta Bhupesh, and minister of state for labour department Tikaram Jully, met the victim and her family. Bhupesh gave a cheque of ₹4,12,500 to the victim as per the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
