Thousands of peasants came out on the streets in several districts of Maharashtra, on June 1st, just two days after the newly elected BJP regime at the Centre took office. The statewide protest was called by the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) Maharashtra State Council, condemning the State Government of the BJP-Shiv Sena for its alleged betrayal of promises given to farmers on issues of drought relief, loan waiver, fair prices, land rights, ration and pension.
The mobilisation witnessed a collective crowd of approximately 10,000 peasants in the 8 tehsils of Thane-Palghar districts. This was followed by huge rallies at Akole (Ahmednagar), Kinwat (Nanded) and Solapur. Several dharnas and demonstrations were witnessed in the heavily drought affected districts of Marathwada region.
It is to be noted, that 1st June marks the second anniversary of the 11-day statewide farmers strike in Maharashtra, that was initiated in 2017.
