On Thursday, over 25,000 people held a peaceful protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Mumbai’s Malvani area. The protest was organized by people from all communities living in Malad, Madh Island, Orlem and Malvani.
Malad MLA Aslam Shaikh told The Times of India, “There was no untoward incident. I raised the question of why the government was not trying to solve issues like farm crisi and unemployment. We have opposed the government’s decision to divide people in the name of CAA and NRC.”
The protesters gathered at a ground in the area and then walked down the road with banners and placards saying “Boycott NRC”, “We reject CAA” and even “Jab Hindu Muslim Razi, Toh Kya Karega Nazi”.
Meanwhile, the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) organized another peaceful protest in Dadar where questions were raised about the two detention camps planned in Maharashtra. Prakash Ambedkar addressed the crowd saying, “People should strongly oppose the CAA and the NRC and work together to defeat the BJP, else they should be ready to be stationed at the detention camps in Kharghar and Nerul.” This protest saw participation from many nomadic and denotified tribes as well.
