Bom HC restrains police from depicting Muslims as terrorists in mock drills

The bench has sought guidelines, if any, on basis of which these mock drills are conducted

Muslims

The Bombay High Court, in an interim order, has directed Maharashtra Police to not conduct mock drills where Muslims are depicted as terrorists.

The petitioner Sayed Usama, a social activist, in his plea alleged that mock drills being conducted by the police department depicted attire and slogans to indicate the terrorists were Muslims. He stated that on the eve of Makar Sankranti in Ahmednagar city, a mock drill had a cop playing the role of a terrorist who was dressed in an attire most prominently worn by Muslim men. The petition also, reportedly stated that during the mock drill when the mock terrorist was "nabbed", he was seen shouting "Nara-e-Takbeer, Allah-u-Akbar" thereby depicting that the terrorist was a Muslim.

The Aurangabad Bench of Bombay High Court with bench of Justices Mangesh S Patil and SG Chapalgaonkar issued notice to the state of Maharashtra and other respondents and has scheduled the next hearing for February 10. The state home department, the DGP, Additional DGP and the SP of Ahmednagar have been made respondents in the petition.

The bench has asked the state to submit if there are any guidelines for holding such mock drills.
