On being asked to respond to allegations that his government was fudging the data on Covid-related deaths in his state, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said the focus should be on how people can recover and that “the dead won’t resurrect” with the furore over it. According to Khattar “there is no point in a debate over the number of deaths…This pandemic…neither you knew about it nor I. We need everyone’s cooperation in these times, yours, mine, and the patients.”

As reported by multiple media houses the Haryana Chief Minister was speaking to the media on a visit to Hisar where he had gone to survey the health facilities. Commenting on the five deaths in the district on Monday allegedly due to a shortage of oxygen, Khattar said, “The limitations of the available infrastructure must be taken into consideration.” Haryana has over 74,248 active Covid-19 cases, and the death toll has crossed 3,767.

According to news reports, while five Covid-19 patients died in a private hospital and the hospital authorities said it was due to the shortage of liquid oxygen, the state administration denied this and ordered a magisterial probe. Over 11,504 fresh Covid cases yesterday, 75 deaths were reported in Haryana in the past 24 hours. Khattar has said that, “It is of no use to say that the deaths are less or more. What is meaningful is to ask if we are able to fix our systems. Which is what we are trying to do.” The CM denied that the system was not being responsive to the SOS calls made by the Covid-19 patients and their families.

Meanwhile, the Haryana Health Minister Anil Vij has announced that the state government has placed an order for 66 lakhs Covid-19 vaccines, which will be administered cines will be provided free of cost to citizens above the age of 18 from May 1. Registration begins on April 28.
