Delhi is Covid-19 capital with over 50,000 Covid cases, 394 deaths over past 10 days

Massive crowds in the market would have you believe that the Covid-19 pandemic has left Delhi markets safe for the festive season. Hoards are thronging the market for the traditional  pre-diwali shopping , some wear masks, some don’t, but almost no one believes social distancing is essential to prevent Coronavirus contamination. 

These are the maximum crowds seen in major markets even as data from the Union Health Ministry states that the National Capital has been one of the top four states that have shown a rise in the number of cases last month. According to a report in the Indian Express, over  50,000 or 13 % new Covid-19 cases have been recorded in Delhi in the last 10 days. Around 3, 50,616 cases were reported between October 25 and November, stated IE adding that an average of 5,062 fresh infections are being reported each. The city recorded an average of 39 Covid-19 related deaths in a day. However, the IE reports that the fatality rate for the past 10 days is 0.84%.

On Tuesday, Delhi reported 6,725 new cases from 59,540 tests — the highest single-day spike in the country so far. According to news reports the Delhi government’s Corona App, shows that while there are beds available for Covid-19 patients, the critical care facilities in several top hospitals are full.  The solace lies in the recovery rate that is stated to be around 90%, with around 3,641 people recovering on an average every day. 

 

 

Meanwhile the total number of Covid cases in the country is well over 82.67 lakhs now.  The number of new coronavirus cases reported in India in 24 hours however dropped below 40,000,  while the total recoveries crossed the 76 lakh-mark,  stated the Union Health Ministry’s data.

The Union Health Ministry has marked  Delhi as among the top four states that have a rise in the number of cases over the last month. A high-level expert committee formed by the Ministry of Home Affairs to monitor the city’s Covid preparedness had suggested that the daily number of cases in Delhi will go up 15,000 per day owing to winter and festive season.

 

 

The ICMR meanwhile states that testing is increasing as planned.

 

 

The health ministry continues to ask citizens to avoid crowding and adhere to Covi-19 protocols, during shopping. The markets however show the real picture.

Maharashtra recorded 4,008 new Covid-19 cases on Monday, with Mumbai reporting 706 new cases, which is the lowest in 69 days stated government data. The Gujarat government had on Monday eased a Covid-19  restriction related to wedding functions in open spaces and allowed up to 200 guests in place of the earlier limit of 100. With 954 new cases reported the state has well over 12,451 active Covid-19 cases at the moment.  

 

 

Rajasthan Assembly recently  passed the Rajasthan Epidemic Diseases (Amendments bill 2020) making it mandatory to wear masks. The state recorded 1,748 new Covid-19 cases, and there are around 15,889 active cases in  Rajasthan. 

In Delhi, Covid-19 testing is now available  for all passengers traveling from the Delhi Airport. According to a report in the Hindustan Times both domestic and international passengers taking flights from the Delhi airport can now get themselves tested for Covid-19 right before their departure. Before this Covid-19 testing at the Delhi airport was only available for international arrivals. The HT report states that on October 28 Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), in association with Genestrings Diagnostic Centre Pvt Ltd, set up a Covid-19 sample collection booth in front of gate no. 8 of Terminal 3 for all passengers. The  RT-PCR testing facility for outbound domestic/international travellers at Delhi requires them to “come to the airport around six hours before and get the Covid test done at the airport by paying Rs 2,400 and get the result in 4 to 6 hours,” stated Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, the CEO of DIAL. According to the statement the booths can collect approximately 120-130 samples per hour.  

Meanwhile, scheduled international flights remain suspended in India since March 23 due to the coronavirus-triggered lockdown. However, special international passenger flights have been operating in India under the Vande Bharat Mission since May and under bilateral air bubble arrangements formed between India and other countries since July stated news reports adding that scheduled domestic passenger flights were restarted on May 25.
