India has recorded over 4 Lakh covid cases in 24 hours, the highest spike worldwide, stated reports. India’s total tally of infections has now crossed 19 million. Unfortunately, it now makes us one of the biggest global hot-spots of Covid-19 cases, which according to a report in The Hindustan Times, cases of – accounting for more than 43% of all cases reported worldwide.

According to aggregator https://www.covid19india.org Maharashtra reported 62,919 infections, followed by Karnataka (48,296), and Kerala (37,199).  The following image is from the ministry itself confirming the shocking rise.

Delhi continues to deal with one of the worst Covid spreads in India. Currently under a lockdown families of Covid-19 patients in Delhi have been sending SOS, on all social media and whatsapp groups seeking information on veltialor beds, ICU beds, and oxygen cylinders, apart from medicines and ambulances. Scores of deaths are being reported each day, as even the seemingly ‘well-connected’ citizens are failing to secure oxygen, or critical care in hospitals.

Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal too announced that he tested positive for Covid-19, and that he had mild symptoms.

In Delhi the ‘Government’ now means Lieutenant Governor after the Government of India notified the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Act, 2021. The provisions of the Act came into effect from April 27, according to a notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). This Act gives more authority to the Lieutenant Governor (L-G) of Delhi over the elected government in the city. Simply put, Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor (L-G) Anil Baijal is THE government in the Union territory now. According to the legislation, the opinion of the L-G “shall be obtained” before taking any executive action on decisions of the Council of Ministers of the Delhi government.

Meanwhile, some states have officially started Phase 3 of the Covid-19 vaccination drive for those 18 years of age from today. However, according to reports, only — Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, and Odisha — are likely to start the vaccination drive for all above 18 today, May 1. Some states, including the Bharatiya Janata Party governed Madhya Pradesh have already announced that the vaccination will not begin from May 1. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has also appealed that citizens do not queue up at vaccination centres and wait for the government announcement that the vaccinations have begun.
