Delhi violence: Court directs police and jail authorities to ensure safety of Umar Khalid and other accused

As the stay on the FIR has been vacated, the accused persons, booked under UAPA will be required to be physically present in the court for the hearing

A Delhi Court has directed Tihar Jail personnel as well as the police to ensure safety and security of Umar Khalid and other co-accused in the Delhi violence case in their transit from the jail to court and back.

The directions were passed by Additional Sessions Judge Naveen Gupta, in response to an ugent application filed by Umar Khalid seeking such directions for safeguarding his security during proceedings scheduled to take place on March 25 in FIR 59/2020, for which he would have to appear in court. The stay on the trial of the FIR granted by Delhi High Court was vacated by the court.

The court considered the application and issued the following directions:

i) The concerned Superintendent, Tihar Jail is directed to ensure the said safety and security aspect of the applicant when the applicant is sent and received back from the Court including the transit for the purpose of physical production of the accused on 25.03.2021.

ii) The Incharge, Lock­up, Karkardooma Court as well as the Incharge,   Police Post, Karkardooma Courts, Delhi alongwith SHO, P.S. Farsh   Bazar   shall   also   to   ensure   the   safety   and   security   aspect   of applicant/accused when the applicant is produced in the court from Lock­up. Both shall coordinate with each other.

The court further directed that the Jail Superintendent and the Police personnel make safety and security arrangements for other co-accused in the case who will be physically produced before the court. the court directed a copy of the order be sent to the concerned authorities, including  DCP, Shahdara District, Delhi; Director General (Prison), Delhi; concerned SHO/Chowki Incharge and the concerned   Jail   Superintendent   as   also   to   the   Incharge­Lock­up, Karkardooma Courts, Delhi.
