On the same day that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) organised a ‘vijayotsav’ for deceased freedom fighter Veer Kunwar Singh, the renowned figure’s grand-daughter-in-law sent out a message that the administration was making attempts to put her family on house-arrest.

Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Jagdishpur, Bhojpur on Saturday to speak during Veer Kunwar Singh’s memorial-day. The freedom fighter is renowned in Jharkhand, Bihar and the nearby region as a revolutionary leader of the 1857 rebellion. At the age of 80 years, he led a selected band of armed soldiers against the troops under the command of the British East India Company. He was the chief organiser of the fight against the British in Bihar and is famously known as ‘Veer Kunwar Singh’ or ‘Veer Babu Kunwar Singh’.

Instead of honouring his family, a video surfaced on social media wherein a descendant Pushpa Singh speaks about how the administration is trying to put her family on house arrest during the time that Shah comes to visit the event.

Already, the family is reeling from grief of losing Kunwar Singh’s great-grandson allegedly due to physical abuse by the police, said Prabhat Khabar news. Three CIT officers Sandeep Kumar, Amit Kumar and Sunil Kumar Paswan were arrested earlier in the month for allegedly killing Rohit Singh alias Bablu Singh. Another accused, Shaddam Idrisi surrendered in the court due to pressure from the police.

The family had barely recovered from this, when their residence was covered and hidden from sight of public viewing, days before Kunwar Singh’s Jayanti. According to Pushpa Singh, all of this is an attempt to cover the administrative attack on her son.

“Today our main entrance of our fort is blocked. We are kept from attending the event. Politicians, even the SP kissed my feet. They asked me to stay calm – that they will get me justice. But I want to tell India that these people keep me from garlanding the statue because they do not want Amit Shah to know about my son’s institutional murder,” she said. She accused the local police of shunning the family and covering their entrance despite the presence of two security officers in her house. Singh previously approached the District Magistrate, the Superintendent of Police, Chief Minister but claimed the police keep her from getting justice.

Reacting to this, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) retweeted the message with the caption, “This NDA-government, which imprisons the freedom fighter’s family, is even more dangerous than the British!”

Meanwhile, ABP Live covered Shah’s speech during the event. He failed to mention the family’s lack of presence at the event.
