A Muslim singer in Assam, who shot to fame through a music reality show couple of years ago, has allegedly received diktat from religious clerics directing her not to sing in public.
A report by Times of India said that at least 46 clerics had signed the diktat against Nahid.
She told news agency ANI, “I was shocked and broken from inside at first, but many Muslim singers gave me inspiration to not quit music, will never do so. My singing is the gift of God, I believe it must be properly utilised, not doing so is ignoring God.”
The state chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal said, “We strongly condemn putting restrictions on performance by young talented singer Nahid Afrin by some organisations.” He added, on twitter, “Spoke to Nahid and reiterated our government’s commitment to provide safety and security to artists.”
Impressed by her performance at Indian Idol Junior, actor Sonakshi Sinha had asked her to lend her voice to her next film, Akira.
Police are also investigating if the diktat came because of Nahid’s songs opposing the terrorism of ISIS.
