Gujarat communal clash: FIR against 2,000 unidentified people

Charges include attempt to murder and rioting, after communal clashes in Gujarat leave six policemen and around a dozen other people injured

Gujarat police have registed an FIR against nearly 2,000 unidentified people on charges of attempt to murder and rioting. This follows a communal clash that took place on Sunday, in which a dozen people, as well as six policemen were reported injured. According to a report in the Indian Express, the FIR also names 47 other persons for similar offences in connection with the incident.

According to the news report the confrontation took place at the Nava Bandar village, at Una taluka of Gir Somnath. There was an “altercation over collision of two fishing boats at a jetty in the village,” stated the news report. It however escalated fast and the mob grew to around 2,000. Members of the “two communities allegedly hit each other with sticks, swords, iron and plastic pipes, and also hurled stones and empty glass bottles,” an official told the media. The news report stated that personnel from three police stations at Una, Gir Gadhada and Kodinar, “as well as those from the local crime branch and special operations group had rushed to control the mob.”

It was reported that even the police were attacked by the crowds when they attempted to intervene. The injured cops include Assistant Superintendent of Police Om Prakash Jat, two sub-inspectors and three constables, officials from Nava Bandar Marine police station told the media. The police, according to the report “had to lob several teargas shells to control the mob”. The FIR has been registered against “47 named and 1,500 to 2,000 unidentified people from both the communities” and they have been charged under IPC Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 332, 333 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt to public servant), 337, 338 (hurting with negligent act endangering human life), 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 and 148 (rioting).
