Haryana: Police use water cannons on protesting farmers in Jhajjar

Farmers allege authorities used "dirty" water, blatantly disregarding their basic human rights

Farmer Protest

A month after the Karnal lathi-charge incident, Haryana’s Jhajjar farmers were blasted with water cannons while holding a protest at a BJP event attended by Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Singh Chautala.

On October 1, 2021, Dhasa border and other district farmers marched towards the Government Post-Graduate Nehru College waving black flags to condemn the three contentious farm laws passed by the ruling regime last year. Farmers protested amidst heavy security deployed in the area and continued to cross over the barricade.

In response, authorities used water cannons on the protesters. However, according to members of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), the administration sprayed protesters with “dirty”water in complete disregard of their basic human rights.

“Those present at the time said the police used ganda paani. This is a huge violation of farmers basic human rights. They even manhandled our farmers,” said a BKU member on behalf of union leader Gurnam Singh Chaduni.

The incident took place roughly a month after peacefully protesting farmers near Karnal city were brutally lathi-charged at the behest of the then SDM Ayush Sinha.
