Recently, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has revised its books for various classes. One of the revisions made by them is includes the 12th class History book, where they have removed chapters on the Mughal empire, while a few poems and paragraphs were also removed from the Hindi book. The “Themes of Indian History-Part II” textbook’s chapters on the Mughal Court, monarchs, and their history have been eliminated from the updated curriculum. The change will be applicable to all the schools that follow NCERT across the country.

These changes have led to an uproar amongst the citizens across the country, with many criticizing the said moves and claiming that these revisions are just attempts at erasing Indian history under the guidance of “syllabus rationalisation” exercises.

Meanwhile, the Legislative Assembly sessions are ongoing in the state of Assam. Outside these Legislative Assembly sessions, journalists get to ask various questions to different MLAs. Since this issue of removal of chapters from NCERT books is a recent one, the journalist were also putting forth questions regarding the same.

On April 4, one such NCERT related question was also posed to BJP MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi by a journalist. While answering this question, Rupjyoti made a controversial statement, one which has the potential to disrupt the harmony of our country. The MLA said that, “I request PM Narendra Modi to demolish the Taj Mahal and Qutub Minar and built largest and most beautiful temples in the world in both the places.” In videos being widely circulated online, Kurmi purportedly demands an investigation into whether Mughal emperor Shah Jahan ‘truly loved’ his wife Mumtaz.

He further added that “I will even donate one year salary of mine for this purpose.”

Questioning why the 17th century king married three more times after the death of Mumtaz, he claimed that one of the seven wonders of the world was built with the wealth of Hindu royalty.

“In the year 1526, Mughals came to India and later made Taj Mahal. Shah Jahan built Taj Mahal with the money taken from Hindu Kings and that was our money. He made Taj Mahal for his fourth wife. He married seven wives and Mumtaz was the fourth wife. If he loved Mumtaaz so much, then why did he marry more wives later,” said Kurmi. It is crucial to highlight here that Taj Mahal is India’s most recognised monument and one of the seven wonders of the world.

It is important to be mentioned here that on June 17, 2021, Rupjyoti Kurmi resigned from the Indian National Congress party, where he was a former MLA of Mariani LAC in Jorhat district from Congress. Three days after resigning from the Congress, on 21 June, 2021, he formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at a Yoga Day function in Gerukamukh of Assam. After joining the BJP in by polls he again elected as member of Assam Assembly from Mariani LAC. This BLP MLA, who was once an ardent critic of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has now joined the saffron brigade, and has taken on the work of attempting to mold the Indian history and propagating communal divide.
