Why is Uttarakhand’s Rudrapur MLA Rajkumar Thukral inciting communal hate

Ever since the Election Commission announced that elections for Uttarakhand's 70-seat Assembly will be held in a single phase on February 14, politicians have been scampering to stay in the news. Uttarakhand’s Rudrapur MLA Rajkumar Thukral, known for his aggression, now been captured on video verbally abusing the Muslim community of the state.

According to local news reports, the MLA seen in a crowd of his supporters without a mask, but donning a saffron scarf, seems to be “reacting” to the discovery of animal flesh, allegedly bovine, found at an empty plot in the area.

The incident, reported by Uknationnews.com, was an alleged attempt to fuel a communal crisis in the poll bound state on Monday. According to reports the meat was found thrown in front of a vacant plot of Gagan Jyoti Barat Ghar, and soon Hindutva groups became active on the issue. Leading the protest from the front was Thukral, demanding that the “guilty” be arrested, and his followers allegedly even used anti-police slogans. A man in the video is heard repeating an allegation that it was local politicians, from the BJP, who had themselves thrown the banned animal flesh into the area.

Journalist Ajit Singh Rathi tweeted a video clip of the enraged Rudrapur MLA Rajkumar Thukral, commenting that the man “literally pounced on some people to hit them” and the SSP of Udham Singh Nagar Dilip Singh Kunwar tried to pacify him. While the MLA verbally abuses the citizens, his supporters chant “Jai Shree Ram” and “Bharat Mata ki jai” like war cries. “Gau mata is the nation’s gaumata,” says a woman who was in the crowd supporting the MLA.

The Uknationnews.com report recalled that some days ago the same Rajkumar Thukral was allegedly accused by some of his supporters of “supplying them the packets of stale food in the rally of prime minister Narendra Modi,” the supporters had then thrown the food packets in a dustbin. The MLA has now decided to verbally abuse Muslims openly.

In 2018 Rajkumar Thukral, according to a report in the Indian Express, was caught on video threatening a woman sub-inspector during a heated argument outside a police station. That video too had gone viral on social media. Thukral was seen rushing towards Anita Gairola, sub-inspector of City Patrol Unit, and asking her to “behave”. An argument broke out between them over two persons who were detained for violating traffic rules.
