Jamia administration bows down to women hostellers; accepts all their demands

Delhi: The administration of Jamia Millia Islamia accepted all six demands made by the women hostellers on March 19 after more than 5,000 women protested at the main hostel gate against the harsh and biased rules of the hostel. The protesting students gathered at the old hall of residence (Girls) with a joint resolution, wherein the protestors proclaimed that they will not let the gate shut until all their demands are accepted.

The six demands included extension of the curfew deadline from 8 to 10:30 pm, installation of street lights in the vicinity of the hostel, improvement in the quality of food, free movement of hostellers inside the vicinity of the hostel, removal of the 24-hour rule prior permission for taking leave, processing of promised refunds and no actions to be taken against the students involved in the protest.

The administration has accepted all the demands and ensured its implementation in the shortest possible time.

“We had been suffering a lot in the backdrop of these draconian rules on us. Finally, after our protest, the provost office has accepted all the demands,” Harmeet Kaur, a Jamia hosteller told TwoCircles.net.

Earlier on Sunday, March 18, the students had met the university officials but all their demands were rejected.
