Agrarian workers and politicians were arrested in Sirsa, Haryana for agitating against the Centre’s three farmer laws at a busy road on October 7, 2020, said news reports.
Around 100 farmers were detained for observing a dharna on the Sirsa-Barnala highway near Baba Bhumman Shah Chowk, along with Swaraj India President Yogendra Yadav and Haryana Kisan Manch Chief Pralhad Singh.
According to DSP Kuldeep Singh, agitators did not have administration’s permission to hold a dharna at the road. Instead the police attempted to move them to the sanctioned Dussehra ground. When they refused, the police took them into preventive custody.
Yadav who attended the event to lend support to the peasants tweeted that he was also arrested and taken to Thana Sadar police station. He claimed that the rattled state government was “bent upon using brutal force to prevent dissent.” Furthermore, he promised that the farmers’ fight will only grow from here on out.

On October 6, 2020 police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse agitating farmers attempting to cross barricades towards residences of Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala and Power Minister Ranjit Singh Chautala, barely 200 metres away from the protest site. Farmers from 17 organisations demanded of the two officials from the Manohar-Lal-Khattar-government for the three farm laws.
