Unable to control another surge in Covid-19 cases, the Gujarat Government has once again imposed a strict night curfew in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat and Rajkot. The city will shut down for all practical purposes from 10 pm to 6 am till March 31.

According to the state government announcement, no one will be “allowed to commute, and shops, restaurants, eateries and malls will not function”. However, essential shops such as pharmacies, milk kiosks, as well as hospitals and other essential services will continue to operate. Those commuting to catch flights or trains will also be allowed to travel, reported the Indian Express.

The most telling factor of the state’s lack of preparation was when on Monday night, the Gujarat Cricket Association announced that the remaining three T20 cricket matches between India and England at the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad’s Motera will be held without any audience. According to IE this decision was taken after massive crowd presence was registered during the first two matches held on March 12 and March 14. Gujarat is one of the top states to have recorded a surge with over 800 daily new Covid-19 cases.

Night curfew will also be imposed in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal and Indore from March 17. Eight other cities of Gwalior, Jabalpur, Ujjain, Ratlam, Chhindwara, Burhanpur, Betul and Khargone will also be under “night curfew-like” restrictions reported times now. All markets and shops will remain closed after 10 PM. Maharashtra had already imposed a 7-day lockdown from March 15 in Nagpur. Only essential services such as vegetable and fruit shops and milk booths will stay open, stated the order issued by the Nagpur district administration. On Sunday night curfew between 8 PM and 5 AM was imposed in Latur district as well.
