The alleged failure of the police to take any action against those accused of gang-raping her led to the suicide of the rape victim in Uttar Pradesh’s Ambedkar Nagar district.
The Deccan Herald reports that, police sources told the media house that the victim, a student, hanged herself from the ceiling of her room on October 5, the day the country was celebrating Dussehra. The police claimed that it had a difficult time persuading the family members to hand over the body for a post-mortem examination.
Given their laxity, two police personnel, including the local police station in-charge, were finally suspended on charges of laxity.
The father of the victim.has reportedly said that she had gone into “depression” after allegedly being kidnapped and gang raped by two youth when she was on her way to school in the district’s Malipur area
“We had lodged a report against two persons after my daughter managed to free herself from kidnappers and reached home… but even after she had revealed the name of one of the accused the police failed to take any action against him,” the father said.
The father also said that he repeatedly met the district police chief and sought prompt action against the accused, but nothing ever happened. “She had told the police herself that she would kill herself if the accused persons were not arrested,” the anguished father said.
Thereafter, dstrict police officials told the media that two policemen had been suspended over the tragic incident, and a “massive manhunt” launched to catch the culprits.
Meanwhile, oposition parties have accused the ruling, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state of failing to ensure safety of the women. “The incident exposes the hollow claims of the state government on women’s security,” a UP Congress leader said.
