Yaad rakha jayega! Farmers mark June 5 with Sampoorna Kranti Diwas

The prompt response from across India, reminds people that farmers remain adamant on their demands for a complete repeal of anti-farmer laws

More than 400 districts across India answered farmers body Samyukta Kisan Morcha’s call for Sampoorna Kranti Diwas by 5 PM on June 5, 2021 and burnt copies of the three contentious farm laws.

Last year on this date, the central government introduced three ordinances which were later forcibly passed as the three agriculture laws:

  • Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance & Farm Services Act,
  • Farmer’s Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act,
  • Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act.

The current farmers’ protest is a result of these laws and as such, leaders of the struggle decided to mark this day by burning copies of the laws outside local BJP MLA and MP offices. Accordingly, farmers from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Tripura and other states participated in the event.

In Haryana’s Tohana region, SKM leaders Yogendra Yadav, Gurnam Singh Chaduni, Rakesh Tikait, joined a sit-in dharna to denounce the local police for arresting peacefully protesting farmers under false charges. Similarly, in Panchkula city, police enforced heavy lathi-charge outside a BJP MLA’s house. As per reports, many farmers were severely injured.

Farmers in Maharashtra and Gujarat observed holika-dahan like bonfires as they burnt paper copies of the law and denounced the central government for the anti-people laws in front of the Agricultural Produce Market Committee offices at mandis.

Further, Karnataka farmers staged a protest in front of the Haveri MP Sivakumar Udasi’s office and other BJP leaders. On top of the three aforementioned laws, state farmers also burnt the Electricity Bill, the Karnataka Land Reform Amendment Act 2020, the Karnataka APMC Amendment Act 2020 and the Karnataka Cattle Slaughter Prohibition Act 2020.
