Guwahati: Two youths were lynched to death in Bijni’s Gargaon village under Chirang District, Assam on Wednesday morning.
As per sources, a village headman identified as Gouranga Das was reported to be missing. Following the incident, the family members of the village headman along with other villagers interrogated one Bipul Das who earlier threatened the village headman for dire consequences over a woman related case in the area.
The two men had allegedly killed the headman of Gargaon village on Tuesday and had buried his body in a graveyard, the police said.
The family members of the headman, named Gauranga Das, along with villagers launched a search for him last night after he failed to return home till late. They found the grave and dug out the body, the police said.
Local people also informed that during the questioning, Bipul confessed that he had killed the village headman on Tuesday night and later buried the body at a nearby cremation ground with the help of his accomplice Ranjit Das.
Angry villagers then lynched both the youth to death on the spot.
Reports also claimed that two women identified as Prajapati Das and Gita Das was also suspected to be involved in the murder case of the village headman Gourango Das and were severely beaten up by the local people. Both the women are now being treated at Bijni’s Bhetagaon Civil Hospital.

Investigations into the incident are on and no arrests have been made so far, the police added.
Several cases of vigilantism were reported in 2018. In August 2018 a man was lynched and three others severely injured in Assam’s Biswanath district on suspicions that they were cattle thieves. In June 2018 two young men, a sound engineer settled in Mumbai and a businessman were pulled out of their vehicle and bludgeoned to death on rumours that they were child lifters at Dokamoka in Karbi Anglong district.
Since then, at least 26 cases of mob lynching have been recorded in the state. In 2017, two such cases were recorded and in 2016, six cases were recorded.
