Assam records first Covid-19 death from Hailakandi district

As India grapples with 6825 confirmed cases of coronavirus, the state of Assam has witnessed its first death due to the infection.

State health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to Twitter to announce the demise of Faijul Haque Barbhyan (65), reported to be an ex-BSF personnel and a resident of Hailakandi district who passed away in the early hours of Friday at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH).

Sarma, had earlier tweeted about him an in alert post about the rising cases of Covid-19 in Assam. He had confirmed last Tuesday that Haque had been confirmed as Covid-19 positive that day and had a travel history to Saudi Arabia. He had also mentioned that the patient was related to the religious congregation of Nizamuddin Markaz in Delhi.

Yesterday, Sarma had given an update on Haque’s health condition saying that his situation was alarming. Though Haque’s other parameters were stable, his oxygen situation was decreasing and he was being shifted to SMCH for better monitoring.

Silchar MP Rajdeep Roy said the funeral of the deceased will be held according to the COVID-19 protocol and the details will be announced later, reported NE Now.

So far, Assam has reported 29 positive cases of Covid-19.

Speaking to Sabrang India, journalist, activist and State-Coordinator Assam, Zamser Ali, said, “At present there are 29 people who have been found Covid-19 positive in Assam and among them 27 are directly related to Nizamuddin Markaz. 26 of these are Markaz returnees and one is the family member of one of the patients. The 28th case is of a man from Dhubri district who was confirmed corona positive last night on April 9, was confirmed to have come in contact with the first patient from the same district who had a Markaz linkage. There has been only one patient out of the 29 who doesn’t have any established connection to the Markaz.”
