Lucknow university denies exam results to girl who protested against CM Yogi

Lucknow: Pooja Shukla, a student leader of Lucknow University, has gone on a hunger strike outside the university to protest the administration’s refusal to release her entrance exam results. She had shown black flags to UP CM Yogi Adityanath in 2017 and was imprisoned for about a month following the incident.

She had demanded a written notice making the stance of the University clear and if their demands were not met, she would go on a non-violent fast until death from Monday. At 11 am today, the fast has begun outside the university gates.

“Shukla, who graduated from the University in 2016, gave the entrance examination for Master in Arts in Women Studies on June 4. When the result of the same came up on June 28, Shukla couldn’t find her name on the website. When she inquired about this with the University’s controller of examination, she was told that the orders to hold her results came from the “top.” According to Shukla, Lucknow University has a policy of showing results of even those who have scored no marks in the merit list. In the light of the same fact, not showing Shukla’s result is a violation of the University’s own policy,” TwoCircles.net reported.

“Pooja Shukla, who is a member of Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha as well as of Samajwadi Party, has said that denying admission result is a repercussion of her protest against the CM. However, the university has also stopped results of about 30 students who applied across 40 courses, without giving any apparent explanation to the students. Following this issue, Shukla met the University’s vice-chancellor with a delegation of five students. As per the allegations, vice-chancellor Prof SP Singh talked rudely with Shukla and her companions. Singh told students that the final decision to allow admission or not rested with him. Singh allegedly also told Shukla that her result was denied as a result of her protest against the chief minister of the state, despite the fact that Shukla was not even a student of the university when she waved black flags at Yogi last year. Sources at the university said that the allegations made by student leader Pooja Shukla are true, and the University has been taking such steps after interest shown by Dinesh Sharma, the deputy chief minister of the state, an allegation which is yet to be confirmed,” the report added.

She asked for support through her Facebook page detailing her protest, the administration’s actions through photos and videos.

What Option Is There Before India And Pakistan But For Friendship And Peace?

The India Pakistan Friendship and Peace March from Ahmedabad to Nada Bet during 19 to 29 June, 2018 concluded successfully even though Ahmedabad Police detained the marchers for about 3 hours at the beginning as soon as it started from Gandhi Ashram and Border Security Force didn’t give permission to the march at the fag end from Nadeshwari Mata Mandir to the border, a distance of 25 km. Hence the total distance of this march on foot was curtailed to about 250 km. From Gandhi Ashram in Ahmedabad the march proceeded along Adalaj, Kalol, Chatral, Nandasan, Mandali, Mehsana, Bokarwada, Sihi, Balisana, Patan, Dunawada, Roda, Totana, Thara, Devdarbar, Diyodar, Kuwala, Bhabhar, Dudhwa, Suigam to Nadeshwari Mata Mandir at Nada Bet.

The March was taken out to demand from the Governments of India and Pakistan to reach an agreement to stop killing each other’s soldiers on border. Recently on 21 June, 2018, the occasion of international yoga day, Indian and Chinese soldiers have practiced yoga together at Daulat Beg Oldie in eastern Ladakh. Why can’t similar atmosphere of bonhomie be created on the India Pakistan border? The two countries need to grant easy permission for visas to each other’s citizens to allow them to travel across the border. If possible, they should waive the visa requirement for old, children, journalists, academics, social activists, religious leaders and labourers. One route on Gujarat border with Sind should be opened to facilitate travel and trade between two countries either at Khavda or Nada Bet. The bus service between Suigam and Nagarparkar which was there till 1972 could be restored. Opening of Khavda route will be a great help for those fisherfolk whose family members get caught by the coastal guards of the other country and then have to spend years in jail without any information reaching back home. Sometimes family members may not even know that their kin have landed in jail on the other side of border. Recently, a Gujarat fisherman Deva Ram Baraiya died in a Karachi jail and his family has yet to receive any official communication from any of the two governments or his body after three months have elapsed. Another two fishermen, also from Gujarat, Dana Arjun Chauhan and Rama Mansi Gohil, suffering from various ailments, were released at the Wagha border. One can imagine the travails of their arduous journey back home covering thousands of kilometers on both sides of border. The two countries must make public such list of each other’s prisoners and ensure their early release preferably through a shorter route. For people who may find it difficult to get a passport made or obtain a visa if the daily evening military ceremony at Wagha-Attari border is replaced by a Peace Park and people from across the border are allowed to meet freely for a couple of hours every day merely by depositing one of their identity cards and under a suitable security apparatus, the event would serve a great purpose. Such peace parks could be created on all openings along the border. Finally, drawing inspiration from North Korea it is important that China, India and Pakistan should give up their nuclear weapons to make Asia a Nuclear Weapons Free Zone and safe for all people of region and the world.
About 500 signatures were collected during the march on the abovementioned issues addressed to Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan.

The peace march received a major boost when PM Narendra Modi’s wife Jashodaben decided to join the march on 23 June for about half an hour in the morning to express her solidarity. She whole heartedly supported the idea of peace and friendship with Pakistan and thought that the killing of soldiers was avoidable. Jashodaben’s endorsement also had a soothing effect on the people subscribing to jingoistic variety of nationalism who were raising questions about the goals of the march. Jashodaben and her borther Ashok Modi also signed the statement of the march.
A demand was raised during the march at Balisana, where about hundred families have relatives in Karachi, to open a Pakistani Consulate at Ahmedabad so that they would be saved the trouble of long distance travel and going to Delhi to obtain their visas.

Baldev Nath Bapu, head priest of temple in Devdarbar, belonging to Lohana (Thakkar) community hosted the peace march during day time on 26 June, 2018, described his experience of travel to Pakistan in October 2017 for about a month. He is building a hospital in Salemkot from the donations he received from his followers in Pakistan. He refuted the allegations that Hindus are forcibly converted to Islam in Pakistan and temples are destroyed there. He said on record that not once during his month long stay there he received any complaints like these. He said that in Pakistan people are talking about the possibility of Suigam-Nagarparkar route to be opened by 2020 or 2022.

Earlier in Totana the march paid its respect to Sadaram Bapu, aged over hundred years, who has played an important part in preserving communal harmony in the area. It appears that spiritual gurus have a role in maintaining peace and harmony along the Gujarat-Sind border.
At a closing event of the march in Ahmedabad peace activists from Pakistan Karamat Ali and Saeeda Diep joined over internet and interacted with the marchers and their supporters. Entrepreneur Piyush Desai of Wagh Bakri tea company was so overwhelmed with the idea of march that he has decided to hold weekly meetings at Gandhi Ashram to promote the philosophy of peace and communal harmony.

A letter has been written to Narendra Modi on behalf of the India Pakistan Friendship and Peace March to start a bus service between Ahmedabad and Karachi similar to the one started by former PM Atal Behari Vajpayee between Delhi and Lahore.

India and Pakistan have been overtaken by Bangladesh in social indices like literacy, malnourishment, sanitation, fertility rate, health status of children and women, women empowerment primarily because the former two countries have invested heavily in defence, including the development of dangerous nuclear weapons, whereas Bangladesh has judiciously concentrated on improving the general condition of its women and children. The security for common people comes from fulfillment of their basis needs. Nuclear weapons at best protect the vested interested of the ruling elite. How is our nuclear weapon providing security to a child dying of hunger or a farmer committing suicide? If we don’t take care of the basic needs of people of what use are the pompous weapons for common people?

India and Pakistan must bury their differences and resolve all their outstanding disputes amicably through dialogue and give peace a chance.

India’s Richest Young Women Fear Public Transport Most; Poorest Fear Cinema Halls

Mumbai: India’s richest girls and young women, aged 11 to 18, felt the least safe among all income groups in public spaces, according to a new report that explored safety perceptions among adolescent girls.

Across urban (47%) and rural (40%) areas, young girls reported feeling more susceptible to molestation or abuse while using public transport, said the report, Wings 2018: World Of India’s Girls, released by Save The Children in India, an international non-governmental organisation. This finding was particularly true for girls from higher income groups (53%), belonging to the other backward classes (OBC) and general castes (45%), according to the study

Girls from medium and small towns (51%) reported feeling more unsafe than those in large cities (44%), small villages (42%) and large villages (39%).

“A possible reason [for greater fear among adolescent girls of higher income groups] could be that these girls lead a more cocooned life without the required level of resilience and therefore feel relatively more threatened,” the study said.

India is considered to be the least safe country in the world for women with the worst record for sexual violence, harassment from cultural and traditional practices, and human trafficking, according to a global perception poll carried out by Thomson Reuters Foundation, IndiaSpend reported on June 26, 2018. A failure to improve conditions led to the country now ranking the most dangerous for women, after it ranked fourth in the previous poll of 2011.

Conducted across six states–Assam, Delhi-National Capital Region, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana and West Bengal–the adolescent girls’ perception report covers the east, west, north, south, central and north-east of India, surveying across 30 cities and 84 villages in 12 districts. The sample included 3,128 adolescent girls, 1,141 young men (aged 15-18), 248 young women (aged 19-22) forced to marry early, and 842 parents of adolescent girls.

Within their respective regions, the selected states performed worst on child sex ratio; incidence of crime against women; early marriage; spousal violence against women; and working women, the report said.

After public transportation, narrow roads leading to school, local markets or private tuition were regarded as most unsafe. Young women belonging to scheduled castes (SC) and scheduled tribes (ST) from lower income households found these areas particularly unsafe.

Over a quarter of young women from large cities (28%), especially those from low income groups and slums, said they felt unsafe in cinema halls, the study found.

“A plausible explanation for this could be that these girls from the slums or the economically weaker section fear that their complaints may go unheard in a place occupied by the relatively better placed–class wise and caste wise,” the study observed. “Maybe for similar reasons, SC and ST girls find the school and the road to the school more unsafe compared to general caste and OBC girls.”

Girls least likely to report molestation/abuse to police or teachers

In urban and rural areas, girls reported feeling most comfortable confiding in their mother, father, close friends and peers, if subjected to molestation or abuse in public. They were less likely to confide in siblings and other relatives and least likely to approach teachers, other school staff and the local police.

“Besides, adolescent girls, their parents and brothers felt that finally it is the ‘name’ of the family and the girl which will be negatively affected–providing an iteration of ‘family honour’ that accompanies girls and women,” the report observed, describing a “trust deficit” with policing and judicial systems.

“Most of them were against going to the police because they (the police) were considered insensitive. It is also perceived that the process involves lot of time and resources and, in the end, damages the reputation of the girl.”

Girls avoided confiding in families because they feared restrictions on leaving home; this was more in urban (49%) than rural (36%) areas.

The second-most reported reason for not confiding in their families was fear of retribution, the report found; 44% of urban adolescent girls and 38% rural girls felt they would be scolded for “letting” themselves be harrassed.

Over 50% of parents agreed that they would “probably end up scolding their daughters” for “letting” sexual harassment occur, while 42% admitted they were likely to regulate their daughters’ movement in public spaces thereafter, the study found.

Less than half of India’s girls leave home to meet friends, take morning walks, play in parks

Generally, more urban than rural young girls and women used public spaces, the report said.

For urban and rural areas, “going to school” was the most universally accepted safe public space (96%) for girls, the study found. Attending private tuition–significantly higher for urban (54%) than rural (32%) residents–followed.

After public transportation, local markets, private tuitions or roads leading to school were regarded as most unsafe among young girls, as we said.

Less than half of adolescent girls in urban areas (41%) could go out to meet friends; in rural areas, no more than a third of girls (34%) could.

Among adolescent girls surveyed in urban areas, only a fifth or 20% felt they could safely play in a public park or go for a morning walk; no more than 15% of girls in rural areas felt similarly.

Young girls also perceived a higher risk of molestation and other gender-related crimes at crowded public places, such as local markets in urban (41%) and rural areas (37%).

Here too, young women from higher and middle-economic classes (42%), belonging to the OBC/general castes (40%), reported a higher perception of risk.

Despite the fear of narrow roads leading to schools, private tuitions and markets, over 80% of young girls preferred walking to these public areas than using public transport, the study found. Cycling also emerged as a popular choice among adolescent girls in small and medium towns, where traffic is lower and perception of risk in using public transport was highest, as we said.

“The sample selected was not representative of a pan-India picture but aimed to assist studying in depth the prevailing perceptions on the issue of safety of girls in public spaces, the related dynamics and implications,” the report said.

The Casualty of Truth in Kashmir

The dispute of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) is a legacy of partition of the Indian subcontinent. It has been an entity of contested claims both by India and Pakistan. The worst sufferers of this dispute have been the inhabitants of the state of J&K. The stakes of India and Pakistan have led to creation of a class that is loyal to their pay masters for different perks and privileges. This class with vested interests keeps the pot of the conflict boiling and do not want it to be resolved anytime soon as they will lose access to unaccountable money and power that they are enjoying by peddling the Kashmir conflict. The conflict surely has become an industry for these vested interests that sabotage every move aimed at resolution of this long pending issue.

Since 1990s when the mass armed insurgency started in J&K, truth has been rendered a casualty. In the midst of blaring propaganda, prevailing anarchy and confusion the truth has became a casualty. The masses were at the receiving end, too naïve to understand factual realities amidst violence and daily killings. Not only the insurgents, combatants, uniformed men became cannon fodder of the insurgency but the opinion makers, social activists, ideologues and politically affiliated people were also targeted indiscriminately. These high profile killings of apparently apolitical people were owned by none of the insurgent groups or state institutions. In most cases the rival parties i.e. insurgents and the state blamed the assassinations on each other. Both of these rivals would pay glorious tributes to the assassinated individuals. Thus in the end the killings would be blamed on unknown gunmen.

The latest casualty of these unknown gunmen in Kashmir is Shujaat Bukhari. Shujaat was a powerful editor of four multi lingual newspapers published from the valley. Further he was a high profile civil society member who was involved in track two diplomatic efforts on Kashmir, between India and Pakistan. Some blame his killing again on these unknown gunmen and point out to his participation in track two efforts that became a reason for his assassination. The police is still investigating the murder and militants have blamed the Indian security agencies for the killing while demanding a probe through an international agency.

Leaving aside the dichotomy and controversy surrounding the death of Shujaat, the masks of these unknown gunmen still remain to be unveiled. The pertinent question has always been avoided and none is ready to engage with the same? Who are these unknown gunmen? During their lives every public person is controversial; some remain shrouded in mystery even after death. But the bravado created around the personalities after their death, makes the controversies and mysteries surrounding their lives, works and engagements go down in oblivion. We have yet to be mature enough to balance every personality according to merits. We have a persistent problem of compartmentalizing people in boxes of right and wrong. We then either condemn them out rightly or paint them as saints and heroes whose loss is always irreparable.

All those people who were vehemently critical of Shujaat during his life were not behind issuing condemnations against his gruesome assassination. This failure to criticize or introspect any personality after death has leaded us to a deadly morass. It has rendered us blind to our faults. For us a person can be with us or against us, there is no middle ground and those who intend to find one are pressurized to join a camp because both India and Pakistan, mainstream and resistance politicians, armed forces and insurgents do not want any neutral voices to emerge strongly as to create a niche among the ‘stake holders’ on Kashmir. Even most of the civil society members are being sponsored by various clandestine hands and promoted to defend and peddle a certain narrative.

Many right wing ideologues and politicians like Lal Singh while warning other journalists to mend their ways described Shujaat as an apologist for insurgents that simply translates to peddle a given narrative and surrender their independence and freedom to report. This is not the case with right wing ideologues only but other politicians and ideologues of different hues also want neutral, saner and independent voices to fall in line. Now coming back to the question of truth, given the previous experience of probes and investigation turns in high profile killings, the real assassins of Shujaat will remain under veils. We have experienced similar results in the killings of Mirwaiz Muhammad Farooq, Prof. Mashir ul Haq, Dr Qazi Nisar, Dr Ghulam Qadir Wani, Prof. Abdul Ahad Wani, Dr Farooq Ashai and Dr Guru. Their killers were never brought to the book. But the time has now come to unveil these forces of darkness who do not want the resolution of Kashmir. Whenever the bridges for dialogue and resolution are made they are ready to burn them.

Someone, some cause, some ideology has to take the blame! Police have now declared a Pakistani militant and two Kashmiri militants as murderers, who happen to belong to Lashkar e Toiba (LeT). LeT had already blamed the killing on Indian security agencies. Anyways whosoever was the culprit but the question needs to be probed is what made his assassins pull the trigger? Did the track two diplomatic efforts became a reason for his killing, did his brave reporting against military atrocities on common civilians was a bone of contention for his assassins or was he being witnessed as a double cross by both India and Pakistan and its spy agencies for the reasons best known to them? What percolated down at the much hyped Dubai conference? Who sponsored it, what was the outcome? What prompted Salahuddin, head of United Jihad Council issue a statement against the same? Whose stakes were threatened by the conference? These questions have to be asked and seriously revisited in the common discourse. Otherwise truth that has been a casualty in Kashmir will continue to be so. This status quo on factual realities and truth will continue to add confusion and anarchy to the discourse as Kashmir. In this prevailing anarchy stray bullets will continue to kill and the reasons will continue to evade us.

When TwoCircles.net tried to contact university officials regarding this story, the phone of almost every official went unanswered. Those who answered the calls refused to answer to the allegations. Muslims in Meerut Accuse Yogi’s Police of Discrimination, Threaten Exodus

In a development which is a reminder of “Kairana exodus”, over a hundred of Muslim families of the Lisadi village in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, have alleged that they were being prosecuted for being the religious minority by the local police under the watch of Yogi Adityanath government. They have also threatened to leave the area where they were born, grew up and have built their assets.

Since the BJP has formed the government in the State last year there has been a background of allegation of police discrimination, but this is the first of its kind of incident in which Muslims have threatened an exodus due to the alleged police prosecution.

According to the local Muslim residents, Lisadi village has seen repeated communal tensions after numerous incidents of harassment and allegedly one-sided action by the police in clashes involving Hindus and Muslims. The local Muslims have put up ‘for sale’ posters outside their houses, requesting people to buy their houses so that they could relocate.

“This house is for sale. I am a Muslim. I am selling my house. Every small incidents and clash here are given a communal angle,” reads the posters and banners that have appeared on several dozen houses in Lisadi area which is part of Old Meerut city.

“There has always been a minor sense of communal tension in the air of Western Uttar Pradesh. So the local Muslims have become habituated with the communal clashes. But since the last one year, the situation has become worse. Right now the atmosphere is always charged with an extremely high amount of tension which could lead to violence any time. Smallest of the fights are given communal colours. Even if a child abuses another child, the elders are quickly involved and they would make it a Hindu-Muslim tension if the two children belong to different communities,” Ismael, one of the residents told Newsclick.

“The problem is not just that. The police do not act as a neutral agency. Police tend to prosecute the Muslims only. Politicians belonging to the ruling party immediately jump in and make it a communal issue even if the matter is far removed from that. A message is being sent to the minority community that no one can save us anymore,” he added with a brooding sense of fear.

Haneef, another resident and Ismael’s neighbour said that though the posters have been put on a few dozens of the houses, more than a hundred families have decided to sell their property and leave.

“We are fed up of the constant tension and fights. People were promised development and not this kind of naked and raw majoritarian atmosphere where everything is seen through the prism of majoritarian identity. It is not possible to live here anymore,” he added.
He referred to two small fights alleging that they were communalised by the politicians of ruling party and the police.

“Two motorcycles collided in Lisadi gate last week but that fight was given such a shape as if it was the two communities who had collided on the road. It seems that ahead of the General Election everything is being shown in a larger majoritarian and communal perspective. So when the two people approached police, one side which was Hindu was given a hearing. An FIR was registered on their complaint but when another side approached police, they were not allowed to even enter the police station. Hence their complaint was not entertained by the police. Is this how a law and order controlling agency should behave? If the police start seeing people as Hindu and Muslim then who will control the fight and maintain law and order in the State,” Haneef asked.

In another instance of a brawl between two groups of people, the group which happened to be Muslim was asked by the police to “go out of police station”, alleged local Muslims.

However, the local police rejected the claims of prosecution. Senior Superintendent of Police Rajesh Pandey said that police was acting in the most neutral manner possible as religious identities do not matter for the police.

Dinesh Shukla, the police official in-charge of the Lisadi area which falls under Kotwali police station, refuted the allegation. While talking to Newsclick Shukla said that if the local residents had some grievance about some incidents, they should approach senior officials. “Putting up posters is not the solution. We are trying to resolve this,” he said.

Interestingly, the local MLA Rafeeq Ansari agreed with the views of the Muslims residents of Lisadi village. He said that the police had increasingly become partisan and even he had to bear the brunt of that, let alone a normal ordinary Muslim.

“I want to ask the local police officials why two parameters exist, one for Muslims and another for Hindus. The police should have acted in a non-partisan manner and should have registered the counter FIR as well, as the popular saying goes, justice should not only be done, it should also be seen to be done,” Ansari told Newsclick.

He said that even the police intervention will not sort out the issue as the society has become much more polarised.

“It is not about one or two incidents. The society in UP has become much more polarised and communalised under the Yogi Adityanath rule. Hatred and violence have been legitimised and made normal. Hate speech and violence like lynching do not disturb people anymore. What we saw in Lisadi area is just a tip of the iceberg,” he added.

This is not the first time that such an incident has been reported from Meerut. Last year, a Muslim family in Meerut was forced to leave a house they had recently bought in an area which was seen as populated by Hindus in the city. The Hindu jeweller who had sold the house to a Muslim family was forced by the local Hindus, led by the BJP leaders, to return the money and force the Muslim family to shift out.
