Continuing the Brave Fight: Kanhaiya Kumar does it again

0

In yet another speech that spoke eloquently of true love of the land and its people, Kanhaiya unravelled the shallow, divisive and hate ridden politics of the Modi regime. Large sections of Indian television did not telecast this speech

Kanhaiya Kumar does it again. In a 55 minute speech on March 15, this time on Parliament Street, New Delhi, the President of the Jawaharlal Nehru Students Union (JNUSU) unflinchingly listed the failures of the Modi government and reclaimed patriotism as the manifestation of the hard labour and contributions of all the Indian people.

Nineteen minutes into the speech there an attempt to by a person to reach up and slap him and disrupt the protest; but Kanhaiya calmed the students in the march and continued to speak. This happened a second and a third time but the speech continued.

Twelve days have passed since his first speech delivered within the JNU campus on March 3, 2016. That speech created record viewing on the airwaves, but this time there was a marked difference. Television channels appeared not to consider it fit to relay this speech by Kanhaiya Kumar.

The march in which students and faculty members participated was for demanding the release of fellow students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya, who are in custody on sedition charges.

From patriotism to the anti-people policies of the Modi regime, Kanhaiya Kumar had done his homework well. Excerpts:

“Modiji desh bhakti aur desh se pyaar  tay hota hai Samvidhan se, Rahstrawaad tay hota hai Samvidhaan se. Samaanta, Bhaychaara, Dharmnirpekshata se, tay hoti hai deshbhakti.”
(Equality, Non-Discrimination, Fraternity and Secularism, embedded in our Constitution constitutes real Patriotism and love of the country)

“It is the people of Bharat who make up this country and love for all the people is love for this country”

“What is Patriotism, but love for India?…..Nehruji said patriotism and love for India is love for the Indian people..”

“Inflation is spiralling, attacks on women are increasing, a rapist is part of the government at the centre; this is a shame; this is all that the BJP is doing.”

“We do not want to learn patriotism from you, you the RSS and the Jana Sangh who had burnt our precious Tricolour in 1943. This country is as much a country of and for the Hindus as it is of Muslims, Christians, Buddhists and Jains, as much a country for Parsis as for Atheists!”

“What has this government done? Look at inflation, food inflation, unemployment and check the variations on the Sensex, people are watching and Indians will judge you on your performance Modiji”

“Modiji aapne kahaan, ek bhaashan se koi neta nahin banta. Jee haan Modiji, Yah aapko bhi lagoo hota hai! Kya Acche Din, Acchi Raat bhi ab tak nahin aaye!!”
(Modiji you said, one speech does not a leader make. This is true and applies to you as well. Forget the good times (days), even the nights are bad)

“We ran the Occupy UGC Campaign to restore and increase Research fellowships being cut by Smriti Irani’s UGC. She came and met us student protestors and promised that by December 2015 a Report would be submitted to Parliament. December has come and gone, January too, February and now we are in March 2016. Where are the fellowships Smritiji? This is a government of false promises”

“In the name of a false patriotism this RSS driven government is trying to divide us. We will not be divided. Where was the RSS when we fought and struggled to get the British out?”

“Who spoke first of the two nation theory, the Hindu Mahasabha; and many of the Hindu Mahasabha-ites are today in the Parliament (ruling party MPs)

" They (RSS and the BJP) spread violence in Muzaffarnagar, but did they grant the minimum support price for sugarcane famers there?"

" Modiji, when you go to UP (where elections are due next year), people will not check your nationalism certificate, they will check your report card. They will say prices didn't fall and the money you promised didn't come (into accounts). What will you reply, that you were fighting the ‘traitors’ of JNU?"

"People are asking, where are the jobs you promised."

Kanhaiya repeated his call for a broad- based coalition against the BJP. " Whatever the colour of your flag, or even if you don't hold a flag. You may see the world from a Marxist or Ambedkarite or Gandhian point of view. Today all these points of view are at risk. There is only one point of view, it is coming from Nagpur: ' Ekal rashtra banaenge .'
(If you understand this point and its intensity, then erase all lines, end this quarrel of colours and capture every colour. This country has no single colour.”)

" Smriti Irani says she is the mother of schoolchildren. OK Mataji , did you call the mother of Rohith Vemula or my mother and say, ' Your son may have done something, but I am standing with you. Meri Ma ko bhi mere saath desh drohi baya gaya hai.  Rohith Vemula ki maata ko bhi deshdrohi banaya gaya hai”
(My mother and Rohith’s mother have also been dubbed anti-nationals with us)

"To those who work for Rs 3,000 in the ( BJP/RSS) Cyber Cell, tell Modiji you won't abuse JNUites…. You won't troll those who like our posts, you won't abuse our mothers and sisters and friends for just Rs 3000. If you rise and say this, the first rally for your rights will happen in JNU."

The Oppressed Indian: a Monthly Journal started by Kanshi Ram

0

March 15, 1934 is the birth date of Kanshi Ram, the founder of BAMCEF [All India Backward (SC, ST, OBC) And Minority Communities Employees Federation] and the Bahujan Samaj Party, a man who revolutionised Indian politics. If alive he would have been 82 years old today. His legacy carries on through a sharp and heightened Bahujan politics

“The Oppressed Indian”, a monthly journal was started by Saheb Kanshi Ram in April 1979, after the re-launch BAMCEF in 1978, which in his own words was “a vigilant and up to date news service armed and operated by the oppressed Indians themselves creating proper public opinion.” Kanshi Ram himself used to write the editorials.

For the editorial of the inaugural issue he wrote:

“All these people of the backward and minority communities, who form about 85% of India’s population, have little share in the news service of the nation. News regarding them or pertaining to their pressing problems appear in the press in a casual manner. Youth, students, farmers, workers, educated employees, and even leaders of these communities keep groping in the dark and struggling without being fully informed…The caste Hindu monopoly of the press gives only sketchy news about the outrages and the atrocities committed on the oppressed Indians. The aftermath and the actions taken, if any, are not given publicity by the caste Hindu press….Baba Saheb Dr. B.R. Ambedkar realized the importance of our own news service to ventilate the grievances of our people and to create public opinion in favour of speedy redress. He realized this some 60 years ago when there were no literate persons amongst the untouchables….”

Saheb Kanshi Ram, following the Phule Ambedkarite organisational philosophy understood the need of parallel media for Bahujan Mass Movement. Before “The Oppressed Indian” he had published ‘The Untouchable India’ in 1972. In 1984, He started “Bahujan Times”, a daily in Marathi, Hindi and English. Then there were more monthlies like Bahujan Sahitya, Economic Upsurge, Arthik Utthan, Shramik Sahitya etc and weeklies like Bahujan Sangathak, Bahujan Nayak. In the same inaugural issue of “The Oppressed Indian”, Kansi Ram concluded the editorial with saying “Publication of the Oppressed Indian, a monthly news magazine is just beginning. The task ahead is challenging!”

Today on the occasion of the Bahujan Nayak’s 83rd birth anniversary, sharing some images of the front covers of “The Oppressed Indian” issues, featuring the formation of Dalit Shoshit Samaj Sangharsh Samiti (DS 4), it’s political engagements, Issue on Phoolan Devi, significance of Independence for the oppressed Indians etc. Mr Shashikant Humane, renowned Dalit writer and activist from Maharashtra, was subscriber of the journal. I am grateful to him for exposing me to these old issues from his archive. Thanks to my friend Abhiyan Humane.

Hate Speech by Law Keepers: NCM Issues Notice to CS Assam

0

The complaint had been filed by advocate Aman Wadud on February 16, 2016 after which the police officer, DSP Anjan Bora was placed under suspension; apart from the NCM the Assam State Human Rights Commission has also stepped in

The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) has sent a notice to Vinod Pipersenia, Chief Secretary, Government of Assam on the “slew of offensive and inflammatory posts directed against the Muslim community by (now suspended) Assam DSP Anjan Bora.”  The Assam government had suspended the official on February 12, 2016.

Following these developments, a detailed complaint was filed by advocate Aman Wadud dated February 17, 2016 to various authorities including the NCM and the Assam Human Rights Commission among others.

The NCM through the communication dated February 26, 2015, has referred to the offensive posts by Bora on Facebook and social media (January 21, 2016 and February 8, 2016)  and wanted to know, from the state government what the follow-up action to the suspension has been. A copy of the notice sent to the chief secretary can be seen here.

Besides, on a complaint filed before it, the Assam State Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has also taken cognisance of the complaint by Wadud and simulatenously issued notices to the Commissioner and Secretary Government of Assam, Home and Political department, Dispur. This communication that can be read here directs that an Inquiry be constituted on the serious matter and information filed before the Assam Human Rights Commission before March 21, 2016.

On February 17, 2016, SabrangIndia had broken the story, When Law keepers trade in Hate: Complaint for Dismissal of DSP Anjan Bora, Assam https://sabrangindia.in/indepth/when-law-keepers-trade-hate-complaint-dismissal-dsp-anjan-bora-assam that detailed the complaint filed by Aman Wadud, a lawyer based in the Guwahati High Court.

Shockingly, on January 24, 2016, Bora, a DSP with the Assam Police wrote on his Facebook account that “We should join hands for a Muslim free Hindustan”; again on February 8, 2016 he posted a comment that “Mr.Rafikul Islam congress Kormi tohotor AZAN bonds korim aru tohotor nisina manuh BTAD t bohut Marilu. Bhale bhale Bangladesh gusi ja. Tur mukhot muti dim goria;” In English this translates as , “Mr.Rafikul Islam congress Kormi I will stop your AZAN, I have killed people like you in BTAD. Go to Bangladesh. I will urinate in your mouth goria”.

In his series of complaints Aman Wadud appreciating the prompt action of Commissioner & Secretary, Home and Political Department, in suspending Bora however also stated that “Anjan Bora is a public servant and was holding a responsible administrative post, he claims to have killed people in BTAD. He threatens to stop the Azaan, he openly calls for a Muslim free India. Thus his act amounts to criminal intimidation.”

The accused has openly promoted enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony.”
Aman Wadud further alleges that Anjan Bora is also a drug addict, who has been suspended earlier too. The Guwahati based lawyer goes on to state in his complaint that “The accused has expressed his criminal intent several times and has also confessed about killing people in BTAD. If ever the accused is reinstated to his service he could abuse his power and position. Therefore the accused should be dismissed from his service after the departmental proceedings for the interest of law and order.”

Further Wadud had stated that “If ever the accused is reinstated to his service he could abuse his power and position. Therefore the accused should be dismissed from his service after the departmental proceedings for the interest of law and order.
