A day after he was widely condemned for allegedly bullying a 20-year-old martyr’s daughter, former India cricketer, Virender Sehwag, has now said that his mocking tweet was not meant for Gurmehar Kaur.

“My tweet wasn’t intended for Gurmehar. It was plain fun but people construed the other way,” he told India Today.

In a dig at Gurmehar’s old Facebook video message saying ‘Pakistan did not kill my father, war did,’ Sehwwag had posted his own photo with a placard that said, “I didn’t score two triple centuries, my bat did.”

There may not be many takers to Sehwag’s clarification because not only did the actor, termed as Twitter troll, mock Gurmehar, but he also shared many tweets praising him for mocking the young girl on his Twitter page.

His insulting post, however, became very popular among those who preached hatred against anyone being seen even remotely critical of the BJP or its ideological mentor, the RSS.
Among those applauding Sehwag for his tweet was Bollywood actor, Randeep Hooda, who shared the former India cricketer’s post with the ‘clap’ and loud laughter emoticons.
Hooda faced Twitter roasting for his decision to join Sehwag in what was widely perceived as an act of bullying. Soon, he issued a detailed statement clarifying that he was merely having ‘a laugh’ on a good joke.

Earlier in the day, Sehwag had avoided questions from media at a public function. The video tweeted by news agency ANI (below), showed how Sehwag desperately evaded reporters’ penetrating questions on his mocking tweet.

Meanwhile, an old of Sehwag expressing his love for Pakistani and its mutton haas now gone viral on Twitter.

User @RealHistoryPic, which is followed by even Prime Minister Narendra Modi, posted the following sarcastic tweet, which has now been shared more than 1300 times.

Taking to Twitter, Menon wrote, “Satender Awana decides to beat me up outside India News TV Studio bcs I spoke agnst ABVP in that debate. So much for Democracy!”

He told The Telegraph, “”When I accused the ABVP of assaulting women, he started shouting, ‘You guys want to divide India’. When we left the studio, he slapped me twice in the newsroom. No one came to help me even after I yelled.”

When contacted, India News’s managing editor, Rana Yashwant, declined to comment on Menon’s allegations.

Menon is currently pursing his MA degree from South Asian University and is associated with the CPIML Liberation-backed AISA.

The debate show in question was hosted by journalist Deepak Chaurasia.

The Left leader’s supporters have now demanded that India News make the CCTV footage of 27 February public to ascertain the truth.

Awana has denied the charges of violence levelled against him.

“Why would I, an experienced ABVP leader, give credence to their (Left activists’) charges by hitting him in public? He tried to provoke me after the show saying, ‘ Tum ABVP waalon se na ho payega (You ABVP people can’t succeed).’ I was the first to leave the building,” he as quoted as saying.

Awana is notorious for issuing threats to his rivals. A video of him threatening his female professor using abusive language, Awana’s video went viral on social media platforms on Monday.

In the video, Awana, a former Delhi University students’ union president, is seen traumatising a lady professor in the presence of Delhi Police.

More recently, on the day the ABVP members had allegedly caused a largescale violence against AISA supporters on the campus of Ramjas College, Awana was seen threatening cops.

Delhi Police reports to the Centre’s BJP government. ABVP is the student wing of the BJP.

Child Marriage

Ten child marriages to be held in Kerala's Malappuram district during summer this year, were blocked by Childline volunteers last week.

A report by Abdul Latheef Naha for The Hindu, states that a call from one of the children to Childline’s toll-free number — 1098, led to volunteers finding the children, and rescuing them.

Malappuram district Childline Coordinator Anwar Karakkadan told The News Minute that one of the girls called the number and requested them to cancel her marriage which was arranged to be held during the upcoming summer vacations.

He said that the school girl informed Childline that she wanted to continue her studies.

“She also said that she would die if this marriage was conducted. Among the 10 girls, two were 15 years old, while the others were 16," he added.

After a call from the first girl, the childline officers informed the Karuvarakundu Panchayat representatives and conducted an investigation, which found that almost 10 such marriages were scheduled for the month of April and May.

Many of the marriages were fixed months ago. According to reports, all 10 girls were from the Muslim community.

The Hindu report also adds that all the families were from a poor background and they were worried about expenses for their daughters’ marriage if it was held in the future.

The marriages were cancelled by the respective ward member of the Panchayat and Child marriage Prevention Officer.

Later, the parents along with the girls were counselled.
