The Supreme Court has dismissed all review petitions to the judgment in the Ayodhya Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid case after conducting hearings in chamber on Thursday.
18 different review petitions had been filed in the case. Petitioners included All India Muslim Personal Law Board, Nimrohi Akhara, Maulana Syed Ashhad Rashidi, legal heir of original litigant M Siddiq and Uttar Pradesh president of the Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind. The Nimrohi Akhara had sought clarity on its role. The SC then directed the Center to provide adequate representation for the khara in the trust that is to be formed to oversee the construction of the temple.
Close to 40 civil rights activists including economist Prabhat Patnaik, historian Irfan Habib and ex-civil servant Harsh Mander were declined permission to file petitions by the court as they were not parties to the original case.
The court had decided to first examine the petitions in-chamber before deciding which would be heard in open court. The petitions were examined by Chief Justice S A Bobde, and Justices D Y Chandrachud, Ashok Bhushan, S A Nazeer and Sanjeev Khanna.
