“Beloved” leader MA Mohammed Jamal passed away

A leader revered by all, he was a key member of the Indian Union Muslim League and was also known as the “godfather of the orphans.”

MA Mohammed Jamal breathed his last at a private hospital in Kozhikode on December 23, 2023, and passed away at the age of 83. He was the much loved and revered General Secretary of the Wayanad Muslim Orphanage (WMO) and a member of the Muslim League state secretariat. At the age of 83, the veteran leader has left behind a legacy of service and compassion that has touched the lives of many, including scores of children who achieved their dreams due to the pivotal role he played in carrying out his responsibilities with the WMO.

He was affiliated with the Indian Union Muslim League, following which MA Mohammed Jamal took the reins of leadership at the orphanage in 1987, succeeding the late veteran Muslim leader Abdul Rahman Bafaqui Thangal, according to Maktoob Media.

He was born in Manikuni, Sulthan Bathery, on January 19, 1940, and from there onwards MA Mohammed Jamal’s journey was built on a commitment to education and community welfare, according to Mathrubhumi. He pursued his studies in his hometown and later at Guruvayoorappan College embarked on a dedicated path with the WMO in 1967. His long and impactful tenure saw him assume the pivotal role of General Secretary in 1988, steering the organisation with dedication.

The Wayanad Muslim Orphanage is currently overseeing 35 institutions in Wayanad, which fruited under Jamal’s leadership. Fondly known as ‘Jamaluppa,’ he served as a guiding light for the children in the orphanage. Community marriages were also conducted under his leadership since 2005.

Beyond his involvement with the Wayanad Muslim Orphanage, MA Mohammed Jamal held a longstanding association with the Muslim League, and arose as a key figure within the organisation. His impact and public service was recognised as he was the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the Kerala Mappila Kala Academy’s inaugural Sharifa Fatima Award in 2006 and the Quaid-E-Millath Foundation’s Quaid-E-Millath Award.

MA Mohammed Jamal is now survived by his wife and three children. He was buried in his hometown, Chungam.
