BJP leader Sural Pal Amu calls for violence if action is taken against Suresh Chavhanke

At an event in Jantar Mantar, he said that Chavhanke is not alone and all Hindus support him for a ‘Hindu Rashtra’

Hindutva

Suraj Pal Amu, BJP’s Chief Media Coordinator in Haryana and President of Karni Sena, has made calls for violence if any action is taken against Sudarshan News Editor Suresh Chavhanke, at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. One hate monger stands up for another hate monger in this case.

In the video, Suraj Pal Amu, can be seen addressing a large audience and can be heard saying, “If anybody touches Suresh Chavhanke, will we let them? (audience shouts NO). If anybody harasses Suresh Chavhanke, will you spare him? (Audience shouts NO). If anybody stops us from making a Hindu Rashtra, will you spare him? (audience  shouts  NO). Suresh Chavhanke is not alone. Entire Hindustan’s 1.25 crore Hindus are with Suresh Chavhanke. Let us applaud loudly in support of Suresh Chavhanke. The Lobby that is working against Suresh Chavhanke, we want to tell that lobby that Suresh Chavhanke is not some vegetable that you can just pluck and eat. If anybody stops Suresh Chavhanke, then we will resort to violence/destroy them.” (speech made in Hindi translated to English)

Amidst the crowd, people are holding banners saying “If Suresh Chavhanke is arrested, we will do chakka jam” and “Say with Pride, we are Hindu”. These are the posters only visible in the video.

The public meeting, in an absolute contempt of court, was allowed by the Delhi Police and no preventive or even penalizing action has been taken by Delhi Police on this. On February 3, The Supreme Court compelled the Maharashtra government to submit an undertaking that a meeting proposed to be held on February 5 in Mumbai, Maharashtra would be allowed only if no hate speech would be delivered at the event. The bench of Justices KM Joseph and JB Pardiwala also directed the police to the power under Section 151 of Cr.P.C. if the occasion arises and said that it is the duty of police officers to invoke the same, as per its mandate.

The section 151 of the CrPC states as follows:

151. Arrest to prevent the commission of cognizable offences.

(1) A police officer knowing of a design to commit any cognizable offence may arrest, without orders from a Magistrate and without a warrant, the person so designing, if it appears to such officer that the commission of the offence cannot be otherwise prevented.

(2) No person arrested under sub- section (1) shall be detained in custody for a period exceeding twenty- four hours from the time of his arrest unless his further detention is required or authorised under any other provisions of this Code or of any other law for the time being in force.

Despite such an order, the Delhi Police failed to take any kind of action against Suraj Pal Amu, strongly indicating the partisan attitude of Delhi Police and disinclination towards taking action against hate speech. It had even caused a delay of 5 months in filing FIR against Chavhanke for hate speech during Hindu Yuva Vahini event of December 2021.

Chavhanke, once again in the news for openly making calls for a ‘Hindu Rashtra’ and invoking people to join him in creating a hindu nation, is garnering support from such other fringe members, who are also an integral part of the ruling party as also of the hate ecosystem in India. The current hate atmosphere in the country is incessant, with news of hateful crimes, not only hate speech but acts of violence are coming to light from different parts of the country, each and every day.

In January, Chavhanke instigated people to go against the Supreme Court by administering the oath to establish the Hindu nation with him, at an event held in Nagar, Maharashtra. He had made similar calls for an oath to “die for and kill” to build India a “Hindu Rashtra” in December 2021, for which an FIR has been filed against him by Delhi Police. The FIR, however, was much delayed and the Delhi Police was pulled up for the same by the Supreme Court . The court has even asked the Delhi Police to submit an update on the investigation in this matter.
