Chhattisgarh paddy farmers lost Rs. 41 crore: MSP Loot Calculator

Farmer leaders voice concern that paddy farmers in the state may lose Rs. 285 crores by May 2021.

Chhattisgarh paddy farmers suffered a loss of Rs. 41 crore in the first 20 days of March 2021, said the Minimum Support Price (MSP) Loot Calculator on March 22.

The Jai Kisan Andolan’s (JKA) new initiative focused on a single state and single crop on Monday to highlight the “loot” in all mandis of a state. As such, the data showed that paddy farmers of Bhatapara mandi suffered a loss of more than Rs. 6 crores. The mandi is followed by the Kurud market that lost Rs. 4 crore and Dhamtari market where farmers lost Rs. 2 crore.

Across the state, farmers received an average of Rs. 1,521 per quintal as opposed to the government MSP price of Rs. 1,868 per quintal of paddy. The difference cost farmers a loss of Rs. 347 during every sale. This despite that paddy is the third harvest of the state.

“If the condition remains the same, then from March to May, the farmer is estimated to suffer a loss of 285 crores,” warned the JKA.

Leaders condemned Prime Minister Narendra Modi for promising MSP for all while data sourced from government website Agmark Net showed that farmers have not received fair prices for their crops.
