Civil society speaks up against ‘Dharam Sansad’; protests planned, police complaints filed

Feminist organisations in Mumbai are amongst those who have filed complaints at police stations against the contentious event and a protest has also been planned in Mumbai

The Forum against Oppression of Women and Parcham have become the newest voices to speak up against the contentious Haridwar event of ‘Dharam Sansad’. The said event that took place between December 17  and December 19 riled up various sections of the society, and these feminist organisations are the latest ones to take action in this regard. A protest has been planned on December 29 at Dadar Railways Station, Mumbai at 4 P.M.

The police complaints have been made by Parcham Collective at Nagpada Police Station and by FAOW at Matunga Police station, Mumbai. The complaints give details about the speeches made by speakers like Yati Narsinghanand Saraswati, Annapurna Maa, Anand Swaroop Maharaj, Swami Prabodhanand, Dharamdas Maharaj, Sagar Sindhuraj Maharaj, Sindhu Sagar Swami, Swami Premanand Maharaj. The complaint also details the presence of Ashwini Upadhyay, BJP member who presented a “Bhagwa Constitution” to his “Gurudev” Yati Narsinghanand Saraswati at the event.

The details of the speeches are as follows:

1)     Yati Narsinghanand Saraswati, Mahant, Dasna Devi Temple, Devi Mandir Rd, Dasna, Uttar Pradesh 201015

(He says, “without taking up arms no community on earth can save themselves or others… Economic boycott won’t work. Hindu groups need to update themselves. Swords look good only for presentation on stage. This battle will be won by those with better weapons than their enemies. All of you good young people should have good weapons.” Narsinghanand also gives the slogan ‘Shastra mev Jayate’ to incite armed violence against Muslims). 7)     Sindhu Sagar Swami
(Sindhu Sagar Swami says “how is a Hindu Rashtra formed, and advises people who are the rich in villages that it is their duty to buy lands owned by the few Muslims there & make the village free of Muslims. I tell my brothers to file Fake cases under the SC/ST Act against 10 Muslims and send them to jail, & asks more people to harass Muslims so much that they are forced to sell their homes and go away). 8)     Swami Premanand Maharaj
(Swami Premanand Maharaj stresses on the need for Hindus to purchase weapons to defend religion, and says “the protection of religion cannot happen without weapons. The complaint states, “The vitriolic hatred from persons who belong to Sant Samaaj is abominable and will have wider repercussions which will impact the Muslim community against whom hate speeches have been made.” The complaint adds, “There is likelihood that these speeches will disturb the secular fabric of all the states of our country, including the State of (add your state) also and this is also an attempt to create enmity between communities.”

The complaint seeks registration of FIR under Section 153A (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race etc) , Section 295A (Deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), Section 298 (Uttering words, etc., with deliberate intent to wound the religious feelings), and Section 505(2) (Statements creating or promoting enmity, hatred or ill-will between classes).

SabrangIndia’s sister organisation, Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) has also filed a complaint with the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) requesting it to take cognisance of the event, and also to take appropriate steps to ensure that stringent action is taken against these speakers at the event.
