CJI’s mother ‘duped’, Nagpur man arrested

Manager of the commercial venue owned by Mukta Bobde had allegedly ‘defrauded’ her of over Rs 2 crores!

Arrested

Chief Justice of India Sharad Bobde’s mother Mukta was allegedly defrauded of Rs 2.5 crores by the manager of a commercial property owned by her. The man identified as 49-year-old Tapas Ghosh was arrested by Sitabuldi police on Tuesday night.

Mukta Bobde owns Seasons Lawns, an event venue located at Akashwani Square at Civil Lines in Nagpur. According to Mumbai Mirror, Ghosh had been hired 13 years ago to look after the property. He was being paid a monthly remuneration of Rs 9,000/- as well as Rs 2,500- as incentive for every booking.

But Ghosh allegedly took advantage of Bobde’s advanced age and did not deposit all the money that came in as booking amount. The embezzlement came to light when the venue had to suspend its activities in wake of the Covid-19 pandemic and people who had made bookings demanded a refund due to cancellation.

Ghosh allegedly embezzled funds for at least two years, failing to maintain or issue proper receipts in many cases. Ghosh was arrested and produced before a court that granted police his custody till December 16. His wife is a co-accused in the case and is absconding. The money is yet to be recovered.
