Bushra Arshad is being lavished with praise for achieving 6th rank in UPPCS, after the results were recently announced, and for being selected as SDM. This girl from Saurikh village is the only Muslim participant to become SDM in UPPSC-2017. She is the same Bushra Arshad who scored 277th rank in UPSC, results of which were announced in July, and subsequently was selected for the IRS, but she was not satisfied with her achievement.

She is not satisfied even with her latest achievement shows her grit and passion to achieve her dream of being in top 20 in IAS. The reality, however, seems that Bushra is fond of breaking the myths and proving the stereotypes wrong.

Her family, relatives, and husband all believe that she will not settle for anything less. They have a good reason for their belief: If a village girl, married with kids, after four surgeries and overcoming the pain of those surgeries, could score such a high rank in one of the prestigious exams and stamp her presence, then everything is possible for her.

Bushra smiles and reacts: Though we could find exemplary achievements from persons faced with each of those obstacles, my facing every one of those hurdles, probably, resulted in my being strong-willed in my quest.

Bushra’s father is a farmer and her mother is a housewife. A lone brother and a sister are also well-educated.  Both parents are graduates. But Bushra, in her mother Shama’s words, is definitely the “Extra-ordinary” one, packed with talent and way better than us.

Bushra graduated at the age of seventeen and a half. She had an MBA degree before she turned 20. She completed her studies up to class XII from Kannauj and went to Kanpur for graduation.

Bushra says that she wanted to give the UPSC exam right away, but couldn’t since she didn’t meet the minimum age requirement. Her mother says that Bushra was admitted directly into the second class at the age of four and a half years. She adds “She already had learned so much at home itself that she never came even second (in her class).” She says Bushra is habituated to be a topper. My multi-talented daughter topped in everything”.

““Make this girl a collector” was the constant advice of anyone and everyone who visited us to my Abbu and Ammi,” says Bushra. “It got me fixated. (Again) Since I did not meet the minimum age requirement of UPSC, I prepared and appeared for JRF test.”

She cleared JRF in her first attempt and achieved a Ph.D. in Distress Management from AMU and that’s how the title “Doctor” got associated with her name. Right after that, she married Asmar Hussain. A little while later Engineer Asmar Hussain and Bushra moved to Saudi Arabia. Asmar started his studies at Jazan University, while Bushra obtained a high-ranking position. Leaving a well-placed position and an excellent package that came along with it, Bushra returned to India along with her husband.

Bushra says, “There was only one reason for our return to India, limitless love and ‘patriotism’, I often used to contemplate that the knowledge that I gained in my country through its residents, the skills born from that knowledge ought to benefit the same citizens, and that is their right.”
Her husband, Asmar Hussain, says that after this he took up a job at Coal India, they had two children. His wife underwent four major surgeries. It has been ten years since, but her desire to become a collector from within egged her constantly.

Bushra adds: “I did my job honestly. I did my duty as a mother. I also performed the responsibilities of a wife without neglecting my husband. I did not use the excuse of constant pain after surgeries to set me back and now I am appointed a deputy collector.”

Asmar Hussain, who is pursuing a Ph.D. from AMU, is a resident of Aligarh. He says that Bushra sits in the front seat of the car as a habit. Once she sets her sight on something, she achieves it at all costs.

Mohammad Akmal, a youth from Kannauj, says, “In four months, this is the second news that a girl from Saurikh has made history.Four months ago, this same girl did wonders. Bushra’s success proves that  excuses are for weak-willed people. She is truly an example of positivity and she is the talk of Kannauj ”.

The Rajasthan elections are out and the Congress is all set to form a government in the state along with also doing the same in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. The ousting of the BJP from Rajasthan has also resulted in a larger number of Muslim candidates being elected to the Rajasthan assembly, even though interestingly this is the first time that no Muslim won from the BJP since 1998.  Compared with 2013 elections when the Rajasthan assembly had only two Muslim MLAs, this election resulted in seven Muslims from Congress and one Muslim from BSP winning. The Congress had given tickets to 15 Muslims in these elections.

Rafeek Khan of Congress won from Adarsh Nagar seat with a margin of 12,553 over BJP’s Ashok Pamami, who was the current MLA of the region. In Kishan pole, Amin Kagzi won by a narrow margin of  a little less than 1,500 votes. The closest fight among the eight Muslim candidates was for Saleh Mohammed from Pokhran, who beat Pratap Pani from the BJP by a margin of just 929 votes. The same could not be said about Zahida Khan, however. The only Muslim female candidate who won, Khan received over 1 lakh votes. She defeated her closest candidate by a margin of over 39,000 votes. Along with Khan, another strong victory for Muslim candidates came from Danish Abrar, who is also the party’s spokesperson for the state. Abrar beat popular BJP leader Ashok Meena by a margin of over 25,000 votes. The other Muslim candidates who won on a Congress seat were Hakam Ali from Fatehpur and Amin Khan from Shau constituency.

Interestingly, the only non-Congress Muslim candidate who won from Rajasthan came not from the BJP but the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Ali won by a margin of over 25,000 against Nempal Singh of the Samajwadi Party with the Congress and the BJP relegated to third and fourth respectively.

The only BJP candidate who won in 2013 elections, Mohammed Younus, was essentially turned into a sacrificial lamb for these elections. Younus, who was the number 2 to Vasundhara Raje, was made to change his constituency on the last day and to make matters worse, he was made to contest against Sachin Pilot in Tonk. No surprises, then, that Younus lost by over 56,000 votes to Pilot who polled over 1 lakh votes.

These elections across five states have resulted in a total of 19 Muslim candidates winning across Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan,  Telangana and Chattisgarh. While Rajasthan and Telangana saw eight Muslim candidates each, two Muslim candidates won from Madhya Pradesh while one Muslim candidate also won from Chattisgarh. No Muslim candidate contested from Mizoram.

Fed up by the constant attacks on Muslims across the country in the name of so-called cow protection, a Muslim from Meerut-Abdul Gaffar Khan-handed over his cow to the local police station.

In an exclusive conversation with TwoCircles.net, Khan said, “I felt horrible doing this…this cow came to me as a calf and I have reared it since to the present time where it a fully grown cow. It is very dear to me, but given the present circumstances where Muslims are attacked on such a consistent basis, I believe that it is a dangerous animal for a Muslim to keep. I am scared and hence decided to hand over the cow.”

Confirming the decision of Khan, Nechandi Police Station-in charge Sanjay Kumar said that two people who had bought cows were harassed and beaten by members of right-wing Hindu organisations. Even the people who sold the cow were harassed by the same people, following which Khan, who is the local councillor, decided to take the step.

According to Azeez, one of the buyers, “we bought two cows from Mannu Singh and asked him to drop the cows at the dairy since it was dangerous for us to transport them. However, members of the Bajrang Dal attacked us regardless and we were taken to the local police station. The attackers were led by BJP councillor Rohit Rohilla. The police failed to take action despite the fact that we had a receipt of the payment of Rs 34,000 signed by both parties. One of the cows was eight months pregnant while the other was five months pregnant. Both the cows were confiscated from us.”

It was this incident that led to Khan submitting his cow to the police station as a form of protest.

Khan further added, “The cow is now too dangerous an animal for Muslims….everywhere in the country, Muslims are attacked by so-called Gau Rakshaks and the police and administration side with the attackers. I request the police to take the cow and hand it over to the Gau Rakshaks.”
