Serial hate offender Yati Maharaj spews venom at Muslims at pro-CAA rally

Yati Narasimhanand Saraswati Maharaj, the National Convenor of the Akhil Bharatiya Sant Parishad and a serial hate speech offender has once again allegedly made a communally charged hate speech at a pro-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) rally organized by the Updesh Rana Youth Brigade at Jantar Mantar in Delhi a month ago. Yati Maharaj as he is fondly known in the right-wing circle, has been propagating population control, has taken grabbed an opportunity amid the protests rising against the CAA to spew hatred against the Muslims.

At the rally, he not only used abusive language against the members of the community, words that can’t be put in print, he said that he thanked another serial hate offender Updesh Rana for supporting the government on the CAA. He said, “This is the first time that something is happening for the Hindus. Till today, whatever has been done has been done for the Muslims. These Muslims who are coming out in large numbers don’t know what their condition would be if we Hindus come out in large numbers.” He added, “I would like to tell Modiji that we are with him. He should bring the CAA and then the NRC and then work towards controlling the population of the Muslims,” using a slur against the community. He said that the Muslims were contaminating the population of the country and that he and all the youth would support PM Modi in his initiative towards population control. Calling Hindus ‘tigers’, he used derogatory words to threaten them saying “their eyes would be gouged out if they try to claim the nation to be ours. India only belongs to the Hindus.”

The maniacal crowd who supported Yati Maharaj in his tirade also shouted the infamous slogan “Desh ke gaddaron ko, goli maaro s***on ko” – a slogan that has become the communal battle cry of the right wing to quell the anti-CAA protests.

He had called for population control back in 2018 too when he used to take letters written in blood to the offices of the Prime Minister. Back then he even backed the current editor-in-chief of Sudarshan News, RSS sympathizer and communal disharmony promoter Suresh Chavhanke who had gone on a Bharat Bachao Rally to talk about population control with the message – “Hum Do Hamare Do Toh Sabke Do” and released an ad warning Hindus that India would become another Pakistan if the population of Muslims wouldn’t be controlled.

This serious dehumanization that Yati Maharaj has indulged in – comparing humans of a community to specific animals, is just an expression of their supremacy where they show that they consider Muslims as subhuman.

Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) had earlier filed a complaint in 2015 against Yati Maharaj and others against statements that were violative of the law where he had referred to Islam as the religion spreading hate in the country and the world at large; apart from calling madarsas as ‘terror-spreading centers’.

This serious dehumanization of Mulims by Yati Maharaj – comparing humans of a community to specific animals, is just an expression of their supremacy where they show that they consider Muslims as subhuman and undeserving members of the nation. This is also one of the stages of genocide as per Dr. Gregory Stanton, founder of Genocide Watch.

BJP leadership continue hate speech, justify Muslim fears post CAA

The BJP leadership and the BJP IT Cell, both are known for spreading hate and saying obnoxious things with the intention of threatening the Muslim Community. Joining the bandwagon of BJP leaders such as Kapil Mishra, Akash Vijayvargiya, Raja Singh is Leela Ram Gurjar. He is the BJP MLA from Kaithal in Haryana.

At a public meeting in support of CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act), Leela Ram Gurjar said that this is not Manmohan Singh’s or Gandhi’s India neither is it Nehru’s India, it is Narendra Modi’s India.

In this video, he can be heard saying, “It is the India of Narendra Modi and Amit Shah…through news and WhatsApp you have heard of people coming and threatening….Miya ji (Slur for Muslims) this is Narendra Modi’s India and we will wipe out within an hour if asked to.”

Our take: This is the first time, India has seen such a policy that has communal divide as it basis. Granting citizenship to people on basis of religion and by excluding only the Muslims, The BJP government has made its intentions clear of creating a Hindu rashtra (nation) which is reflected in the hate speeches of its regional leaders who gloat about their superficial and misplaced Hindu pride and are creating a fear psychosis amongst the Muslim Community in India.

Modi-Shah’s CAB 2019 unleashed hate on social media, was also stopped in its tracks

As was expected, BJP’s IT cells have gone all out in propagating vicious and spiteful nationalism on Twitter. The Citizenship Amendment Bill that proposes to grant citizenship to non-Muslim undocumented migrants from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh was passed by the Lok Sabha a little after midnight of December 9, effectively December 10 which happens to be International Human Rights Day. This happens to be the dreariest incident to have taken place on a day like Human Rights Day, to have passed a bill that abrogates human rights of Muslim migrants in India.

On a day like this, the topic trending on number 1 on Twitter India is #भारतमेरेबापकाहै (Literal Translation: India belongs to my father!). This phrase in Hindi “Bharat Mere Baap ka hai” refers to a falsesense of entitlement that right wing Hindu extremists have, of exclusivist ownership over the ‘nation’ that is India. No doubt their vision of “Hindu Rashtra”. These right-wing extremists live under the delusion that India was always meant to be a Hindu nation, especially after Partition, which led to a Pakistan for Muslims.

India’s Home Minster, Amit Shah, while addressing the Parliament on this bill, stated that, had Congress not partitioned India, his government would not have had to take such a step. What Mr. Shah seems to have forgotten is India’s constitutional history: although Pakistan adopted Islam as its religion, India stood by composite nationhood. Hundreds of thousands of Muslims, too, resisted the lure of an Islamic state driven by Jinnah and the Muslim League, casting their lot with a secular, republican India. Moreover, the role of the Hindu Mahasabha (resolution passed by its ideologue Savarkar in Ahmedabad in 1935) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in propagating an ‘exclusivist nationhood’ is integral to this history.

Gaining inspiration from the subtle venom being spewed at the very top, the large troll army of the Sangh has taken to Twitter to gloat over, what they see as the beginnings of the creation of a ‘Hindu Rashtra’.

NHRC finds Untouchability and Caste Based Atrocities still rampant in Gujarat

A bench of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), that was conducting a two day open hearing of human rights cases in Gujarat, was shocked to discover that members of Scheduled Tribes (STs) and Dalits reported untouchability and caste-based atrocities in nearly 75% of Gujarat villages. The facts were brought to their attention by some NGOs. “We have categorically asked the chief secretary and the state DGP to take proactive action against perpetrators,” said NHRCChairman Justice H L Dattu.

Justice Dattu also admitted that the commission did not know anything about the state’s actions in the 2012 Thangadh police firing incident, where three Dalit youths were killed. “I am hearing of the Thangadh firing incident for the first time,” Dattu said. He also said that they had no information about action taken in the much-publicised Una Dalit flogging incident, where the victims recently declared their intent to convert to Buddhism due to the state’s apathy.

The NHRC Panel ruled on several important cases such as that of the suicide of Parvata Bhai Koli, a Pakistani man in Radhanpur jail in 2013. The custodial death case had been referred to the NHRC in 2015. The NHRC directed that a compensation of Rs 1 lakh be paid to Koli’s kin. It also directed the Gujarat government to pay Rs 2 lakhs as compensation to the family of Narvata Meda, who was found dead in the lock up of the Dhanpur Police Station in Dahod in 2011.

Meawhile the commission has also ordered an inquiry into the high rate of child mortality at Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital in October last year. Moreover, in the matter pertaining to cases manual scavenging deaths, where the state records a worrisome figure of 161, NHRC member Jyotika Kalra said, “The state government has assured Rs 10 lakh compensation for each of the 40 victims who died after 2014.”

The commission said that of the 17.5 lakh human rights cases across the country since the inception of the NHRC, Gujarat has reported 26,500 cases.
