As the protests across both IIT Madras and JNU surged with more and more students coming out on the streets, hundreds of students from various colleges affiliated to Mumbai University and civil rights groups came out in protest to express their solidarity with the protesting students.

The protest gathering, held at the Mumbai University, Kalina Campus, highlighted the rampant discrimination taking place in Indian campuses and the importance of free and subsidised education to support the students coming from Dalit Bahujan communities. The call for protest was given by the Joint Action Committee for Social Justice, Maharashtra.

student protest

A graduate student Niket present at the protest said, ”This is all because of caste and religious discrimination. It is not only colleges, even at the school level, one can witness such discrimination based on surnames. It is easy to label people by saying, you are Hindu, you are Sikh, you are Muslim, you are Christain, you are a Dalit, this is not how I imagine India should be, we want an India which is free of such discrimination and follows brotherhood. Fathima’s case is not a case of suicide, three people have been named in this, and the police is not doing anything as even they are under pressure”.

Regarding the rampant discrimination taking place on Indian University Campuses students opined that it is nothing new, but it is only coming to light now. A PhD student, Piyush said, “I think such discrimination existed even before if you read Om Prakash Valmiki. He writes about how he faced discrimination on all levels even in school. What I feel is before people (from other castes) were not even seen in Universities, at least after the 1990s they were able to make it to the Universities, but I don’t think that an atmosphere of acceptance has developed in any University as such.

student

“When such students make it to Universities, there are expectations from both sides one from University and one from home. It’s a simple thing, but neither the education ministry nor all these Vice-Chancellors understand this point. Now if you go to any University page you will see that for a hostel such places are charging Rs 30,000 -40,000. When poor students from villages will see such things, what will they think? They will think it’s better to remain back in the village and work. The only solution I see for this is to make education free, and give them legal protection and offer financial support.”

A similar protest gathering was held yesterday in IIT Bombay with a fresh set of demands made by the students. This is the sixth case of suicide on the campus of IIT Madras this year. A statement released by the students called it institutional murder. The students have demanded an independent inquiry from the MHRD, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment and National Commission for Minority Affairs. The students have also demanded that SC, ST, OBC cells, as well as Gender and Minority Cells, should be formed across all IITs to safeguard the interest of students.

Ayodhya Verdict

Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamath organised a massive demonstration against the Supreme Court verdict regarding the Babri Masjid verdict, condemning the decision, saying the promise of rebuilding the mosque was never fulfilled.

“While so much injustice has been done to Muslims, an image has been strongly being portrayed as if the Muslims unanimously had accepted the verdict…to ensure that it is not misrepresented in history, Tamilnadu Thowheed Jamaath is holding a massive protest,” said the organisation.

Ayodhya verdict

TNTJ said the Supreme Court was expected to provide judgement based on laws instead provided the verdict based on beliefs. “This decision has been extremely disappointing for Muslims, who were hoping for justice,” the organisation added.

Tamilnadu Thowheed Jamaath also appealed to the Muslim proponents to not accept this 5-acre land offered to them.

Ayodhya

The UP Police booked four people, including one student of the Aligarh Muslim University, for their Facebook posts following the Ayodhya Verdict. On November 11, the UP Police booked Aaquib Khan, Asif Idress, Mudabbir Ali Chaudhary and Mohamed Abdulla under Section 153 A (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion) of IPC and section 67 IT Act (publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form).

The four, who are yet to get a copy of the First Information Report, had taken to Facebook to express their opinion on the Ayodhya Verdict. The ownership of the disputed land in Ayodhya was given to Hindus while Muslims were allotted an alternate land in a landmark judgement by the Supreme Court on November 9.

The unanimous decision by the five-judge SC Bench said it was clear that Babri Masjid was not built on vacant land and that there was a structure beneath, but it could not be said for sure that it was a specified temple.

However, the UP Police, which had issued statements to maintain peace and refrain from making comments that could inflame communal tensions, has acted against these four individuals for their Facebook posts.

Speaking with TwoCircles.net, Mudabbir Ali Choudhary, one of the persons booked, said he was extremely surprised at the action of the UP Police. Choudhary is an ex-student of AMU and currently resides outside UP. “I merely asked for a judicial review on the matter in my post, something that has been said by several people,” he said. “It was just one post. Around midnight, the SSP office messaged me saying that this post could impact communal harmony and asked me to delete the same. Following this, I deleted it immediately. But yet they took action against me which I do not understand,” he added. “What did I say which was different compared to other people?” he asked.

The post for which Mudabbir Ali Chaudhary was booked by the UP Police.

Asif Idrees, another person booked, also said he had received a similar message from the UP Police. “I said that the verdict was a threat to the secular democratic fabric of the country. However, someone reported my post on Facebook and even before I received the message from the police, it had been taken down by Facebook. What did I say which has not been said by other eminent people? From academicians to legal experts, many people have questioned the same, then why take action against the students?” asked Idrees.

The message from the SSP, following which Chaudhary deleted his post immediately.

Idrees and Chaudhary said they will wait for the FIR before seeking legal action. Dr Arvind Kumar, SP (Crime) Aligarh told TwoCircles.net, “Merely saying that we have removed the post does not absolve them of their actions. We will take action as per the law.”

Following the Ayodhya verdict, some people had been left puzzled by the decision. Faizan Mustafa, a law professor and Vice-Chancellor of Nalsar University of Law, Hyderabad, said in a Huffington Post article that the Supreme Court seems to have weighed religious belief over the rule of law. Similarly, retired Supreme Court judge AK Ganguly expressed his discontent with the Apex court’s decision of giving the land to the Centre for the construction of Ram temple and said that the minorities have been “wronged”. Markandey Katju, a former judge of the Supreme Court of India, said in an article in the Wire, “In substance, the court has said that might is right, and has laid down a dangerous precedent sanctifying aggression.”

In yet another case of custodial killing, a policeman who was suspended and later arrested for alleged wrongdoings was murdered by fellow policemen in Imphal, Manipur on March 30.

Manjur Alam, who had been posted at Reserve Lines, Imphal East as Police Constable, was suspended on March 12 after the police found his phone number and a photo on the phone of dreaded extortionist and kidnapper Thockchom Nando, who was the alleged mastermind of rape and murder of L Elizabeth, an 8-year-old girl, in 2003. Nando had been brought in for treatment to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences in November 2018 for treatment for spinal injury. On March 25, he escaped the hospital following which the police launched a statewide search. Manjul Ahmed was arrested in this regard and sent to remand at the Porompat Police Station in Imphal on March 27. On March 30, he was brought to JNIMS where he was declared dead upon arrival.

The sudden death of the 34-year-old policeman who was in perfect shape and had been serving duty until two weeks ago has raised severe doubts over the actions of the police. A Joint Action Committee set up in support of Ahmed said this was a clear case of murder. “How can a fit person die in three days in remand? What did the police do to him? It is clear that the interrogation methods used on him proved to be fatal,” said  Miraj Shah Kori, a member of the JAC. “Also, it must be questioned how a person like Nando had a phone to begin with. How was that allowed? And why did the police not arrest other people whose phone numbers were on his contact list? Why only Manjur?” he asked. “A dreaded criminal like Nando was given a fair trial so why wasn’t Manjur given the same chance?” he questioned.

What makes the murder even more murky is that the police blamed Manjur for helping Nando escape, even though Manjur was under suspension when Nando escaped. In fact, only yesterday the police have arrested 10 people in connection with the escape of Nando. Shah, however, says that this is immaterial now. “Manjur was a dedicated person and had been facilitated by the authorities in December for his work. Even if he was at fault, how can anyone justify murdering him? There is a law in place so why not take that course? If he was guilty, punish him. But he was killed by the authorities instead,” said Kori.

The Joint Action Committee has demanded a CBI inquiry into the issue and the arrest of the guilty police personnel. They have also asked to ensure that the police investigate the matter of Nando’s escape with utmost seriousness and ensure that the guilty are arrested. Meanwhile, the Court has issued a non-bailable warrant against Nando.

This is the third custodial murder in Manipur in the last four months. A custodial murder took place in Thoubal District of Manipur in December while another took place in Keibul, Bishunpur District in February. In both cases, the accused who were arrested were found dead in police custody.

On April 1, the JAC organised a sit-in protest at the main gate of Yairipok Azad Hr Sec School against the death of Md Manjur Ahmed.
Speaking to the media persons, Sajida (younger sister of Manjur) said that she was serving breakfast to her brother on March 27 when one of the police personnel took him for interrogation. Three days later, the police handed over the dead body of her brother.

After waiting for years on end, and at the same time working tirelessly for the Congress party, Advocate Shanimol Osman has got a ticket to contest for the Lok Sabha seat from her hometown Alappuzha. She is the lone Muslim woman candidate fielded by the Congress from Kerala and in fact the lone Muslim candidate from Congress after Advocate T Siddiq backed off for Rahul Gandhi to contest from Wayanad.

Shanimol Osman ( Picture from facebook)

Osman, the first woman secretary of the AICC from Kerala has worked for the party since joining the Kerala Students Union years back. Ever since, she has served the party in different positions such as President of the Kerala State Mahila Congress, Municipal Chairperson at Alappuzha, member of the Alappuzha District Panchayat, member of the District Planning Committee, and member of the committee for the National Youth Programme. She is presently a member of the AICC, the Political Affairs Committee in the Kerala PCC and the Pradesh Election Committee.

Osman had been in the news after the defeat of the Congress-led UDF in the last Assembly elections in the state in 2016. She alleged that she was defeated in the constituency of Ottappalam as the Congress had given its votes to the BJP candidate. She also said on Facebook that she was a victim of the caste-group politics inside the party, which kept her away from positions. She boycotted the KPCC meeting held after the elections, along with senior leader Bindu Krishna, demanding to discuss the reasons for the failure of the Congress.

Shanimol Osman speaking at an election convention ( Pic ffom face book)

She had also contested in the by-election to the Perumbavoor constituency in 2009 but lost to Saju Paul of the CPIM. She was offered a seat in the Kasargod Parliament constituency, an LDF stronghold, in 2014 but she refused.

Shanimol graduated in Zoology from SD College, Alappuzha, and is a postgraduate in Sociology from the Loyola College, Thiruvananthapuram.  She then completed LLB from the Kerala Law Academy, Thiruvananthapuram. The 52-year old has a son and daughter – Alif Sathar Osman and Asya Thami Osman.  A Mohammed Osman is her husband.

The LDF candidate AM Ariff, who is presently MLA from Aroor, is also a native of Alappuzha.  He has been representing Aroor in the Assembly since 2006. The NDA has fielded Dr KS Radhakrishnan, former chairman of the Kerala Public Service Commission and former VC of the Sree Shankaracharya University for Sanskrit in Kalady, who recently joined the BJP.

The district of Alappuzha was the worst affected in the deadly floods which savaged Kerala last year. The Parliamentary constituency is made up of six assembly constituencies in the district and Karunagappalli in nearby Kollam district. While the UDF had a clear lead in all but one Assembly segment in the 2014 LS elections, it lost all but one in the 2016 Assembly elections. The UDF focuses on the national issues such as communalism and corruption targeted against the NDA, and attacks the CPIM for its violent politics. Osman had been highlighting on women’s issues too, such as the insecurity faced by girls and sexual abuses. The LDF is mainly focusing on the development works done by its candidate in his constituency.

The constituency was won by the Congress in the last two elections by its national secretary KC Venugopal, who refused to contest this time citing organizational responsibilities (AICC general secretary in charge of Karnataka). While the UDF is asking for votes to continue the development activities of the last ten years, the LDF is asking for a change.

New Delhi: The Union Budget looks like a “very glossed over budget” for Dalits and Adivasis with reduction in allocations for key schemes, said National Campaign on Dalit Human Rights (NCDHR).

File Photo

“Although there is an increase in the allocation, there are several key schemes where the allocation has been reduced, like the post matric scholarship where it has been reduced to Rs.2926 crore starving the one scheme which will directly benefit the youth of the community…the gloss is only a ‘dhikhawa’”, said N Paul Divakar, General Secretary, NCDHR.

It is important to point out that in 2017, there was a fundamental shift made towards a ‘welfare model of SC/ST’, revamping Scheduled Caste Sub Plan and Tribal Sub Plan to Scheduled Caste Component and Scheduled Tribe Component (henceforth, SCC-STC). Following this shift, new guidelines were issued by Niti Ayog in December 2017 for earmarking of funds for Development Action Plan for SC & ST (AWSC & AWST) which have shed light on how the funds for development schemes for the SCs & STs have to be allocated by the concerned Ministries. These guidelines were not incorporated in the Union Budget 2018-19.

“The projections of historical increase in the allocations for SC are at 35.6% and 28% for ST’s this year hide several harsh realities we have to deal in this election year. The biggest take-away from Budget Speech of Interim Finance Minister is that it ignored its own ministry’s formulated guidelines of December 2017 which had laid very important series of norms for allocating and implementing schemes for SCs and STs. Allocations under CSS and CS towards SC and ST development are to be a minimum, and not less than their proportionate population, which according to Census 2011 is 16.6% for SCs and 8.6% for STs,” NCDHR said.

In the current year, Rs. 76,801 crore i.e. 8.16 % of the total eligible Central Sector Scheme & Centrally Sponsored Schemes is allocated for the SCs and Rs. 50,086 crore i.e. 5.34 % for the STs.

“The due share of the Scheduled Castes in SCC this year amounts to Rs. 1, 39,660 crore and for Scheduled Castes in STC is Rs. 75,987 crore. There are 9 new ministries / departments for SC’s and 3 for ST’s which are set to implement new programmes along with the existing ones. The share of Dalit & Adivasi women in the gender budget statement amounts to Rs. 6851.48 crore which constitutes 5.2 % of the total gender budget statement which is proposed to be of Rs. 1,31,699.5 crore,” NCDHR added.

The NCDHR analysis of last five-year trend of the Scheduled Caste Component plan shows that out of total allocation of Rs. 5,05,015 crore which is the mandate as per guidelines, only Rs. 2,29,243 crore has been allocated. And only Rs. 81,155 crore is a direct allocation, meaning directly benefiting the Dalits. A huge amount of Rs. 1, 48,088 crore has been allocated for non-targeted schemes which can hardly be of any direct benefit to the community.

Pointing out this trend, NCDHR said in the current year, “targeted or direct allocation under SCC amounts to Rs. 41391.41 crore out of Rs. 76,801 crore and Rs. 20167 crore out of Rs. 50,086 crore under STC. The trend of non-targeted allocations both in statement 10A and 10B continues unabatedly. Good schemes are getting punished and irrelevant schemes keep increasing. This year, out of 315 schemes for SC, 226 schemes are non-direct and without any strategy to give benefits to the community. Similarly, only 21 out of 324 schemes for scheduled tribes have potential to give direct benefits, while rest of them are general in nature. Huge amount of fund has been allocated under irrelevant schemes which amount to Rs. 35409.48 crore for SCC and Rs.29919 crore for STC. This means, under STC, 60% allocation is irrelevant and under SCC 47% allocation is irrelevant.”

Take for example the fact that Rs. 2,200 crore has been allocated towards Swacch Bharat Abhiyan from SCC and Rs. 1,000 crore from STC but less than proportionate allocation has been allocated towards ensuring alternative employment opportunity to the community engaged in manual scavenging. Similarly, an allocation of Rs. 30 crore has been done under the Self Employment Scheme for Rehabilitation of Manual Scavengers and allocation of Rs. 35 crore has been done for the National Safai Karamcharis Finance & Development Corporation.

But more worryingly, massive amount of allocation amounting to Rs.1823.32 crore has been allocated under the Department of Telecommunications and Rs. 3,166 crore has been allocated under the Department of Higher Education which involves major diversion of funds towards setting up and supporting IIT’s, IIM’s, IISER,NIT and others.

The following demands were made by NCDHR during its press conference:

  • National Legislation: The policy of allocation of funds is hanging loose post-merger of Plan-Non Plan scenario. This must be legislated and machinery established not only to bridging the gap but for ensuring financial inclusion.
  • Manual Scavenging: Increase allocation for manual scavenging to ensure that this practice is totally eliminated and adequate mechanisms should be in place to monitor and track the effective use of the funds.
  • Gender Justice: A special component for the Dalit women should be allocated within the scheduled caste component and Scheduled Tribe Component. Innovative schemes like the Nirbhaya Fund for the survivors of sexual assault, schemes for the socio-economic rehabilitation of the survivor of atrocities and their families should be ensured, by providing housing, livelihood support, education facilities and safety including free legal aid to survivors of atrocities.
  • Planning with Community: For the new ministries which will now earmark allocations under the sub-plans, there need to be new schemes planned and designed for providing direct benefits for the SC & ST communities.
  • Access to Justice: Adequate budgetary allocations to ensure that both punitive and pecuniary measures are in place to prevent the high incidences of violence and atrocities that are taking place on Dalits and Adivasis. Special Courts for speedy trial of cases related to Dalit & Adivasi community. Increased compensation amount to be given to victims of caste and ethnicity-based atrocities. Schemes for the socio-economic rehabilitation of the survivor of atrocities and their families should be ensured, by providing housing, livelihood support, education facilities and safety including free legal aid to survivors of atrocities.
  • Appoint teachers in the government schools, specific /special schools for ST and SC such as the Eklavya Model Schools, Kasturba Gandhi Vidyalaya;
  • Legislate and Implement the Bill – Prevention of All Forms of Discrimination and Violence against Children in Educational Institutions.
  • ensure prevention of all forms of discrimination and violence in primary, secondary, senior secondary schools, anganwadis and hostels
  • Empowered Nodal Ministries: Though Nodal
  • Ministries for SC funds – MSJE (Ministry for Social Justice Empowerment) and for ST funds (Ministry of Tribal Affairs) are appointed, there needs to be sufficient resources allocated for an efficient machinery capable of implementing the plans for SC ST welfare and development. Nodal ministries should be empowered to take strict penal measures against the defaulting Ministries and Departments.

The Central University of Kerala (CUK) is again in the news now for all the wrong reasons. A senior PhD scholar was dismissed from the hostel following a police case and arrest after he broke a glass pane in the hostel. A professor who criticized it on the social media was also removed from the post of the head of the English and Comparative Literature Department while another student was dismissed for his Facebook post. And the University reportedly issued a circular on August 14 barring students and teachers of the institution against responding to the media on the issues.

Circular of the university forbidding employees reaching out to the media

The acts of the university authorities have invited sharp criticism and protest from students, academicians and civil rights activists alike.  The CUK chapter of the Ambedkar Students’ Association organised an event of collective reading on Ambedkar’s ‘Annihilation of Caste’ in the university on September 13. On September 11, the organisation had submitted its demands before the Pro-VC as the VC, Dr Gopakumar, was not available, and accordingly, a meeting has been arranged to be held between the students and the VC on September 18. Civil rights activists and academicians from Kerala expressed their solidarity and support to the democratic rights of the teachers and students of the CUK in a joint statement issued on September 9.  The Kasargod district committee of the Left Democratic Front has called for a comprehensive probe into the alleged irregularities in the university.

In another development, a few glass panes were broken during the protest march held by the SFI and DYFI to the campus on Wednesday, and the university authorities reportedly filed a police case against four students.  A protest is going on in the campus even as classes are being held as usual.

The incident related to the latest happenings took place in July. Ganthothi Nagaraju, a senior PhD scholar hailing from Telangana and active member of the Ambedkar Students Association, broke the glass pane of a fire alarm cabinet in the hostel. Nagaraju who had completed his MPhil from the University of Hyderabad was a close friend of Rohit Vemula (who committed suicide in 2016 protesting caste discrimination). He had lost his mother a month back and had not received his fellowship for months, and hence was understood to be mentally depressed and frustrated at the time.  He was reportedly suspended from the hostel on July 9. He admitted to the authorities of breaking the glass pane (which cost less than Rs 200) and got ready to pay fine for the same. But the authorities registered a complaint with the police, who arrested him on August 9 under the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. He was remanded for 5 days on the trivial charge, before getting bail on August 14, but has to report to the Bekal police station every Saturday. Nagaraju was actively involved in the protests in the university for democratic rights, including better hostel facilities, and he has now been out of the hostel altogether.

Dr Prasad Pannian, associate professor and head of the Department of English and Comparative Literature at the CUK, put up a post on his Facebook wall extending solidarity to his student Nagaraju. Dr Pannian was then removed from the post of the Head of the Department on September 7.  Reports suggest that Dr Pannian was not in the good books of the administration as he used to question several moves taken by the authorities, especially when he was the Chief Vigilance Officer a few years back. The University authorities have also released a media statement on September 11, digging up old files against Dr Pannian, after the CUK received harsh criticism from all corners for the action against the assistant professor.

Akhil Thazheth, a student of MA International Relations and Political Science, was also dismissed on September 7 for the same reason – a post on Facebook which, the authorities say, was critical of the actions of the university. Akhil had posted a part of his Malayalam story on Facebook, after which he was suspended pending an inquiry on the matter on June 25, according to reports. The inquiry panel asked him to apologize in two sittings but he refused to maintain he hadn’t done anything wrong, and he was expelled.
Dismissal order of Akhil Thazheth

The Central University of Kerala was established in the state’s northernmost district of Kasargod in 2009.  It currently has more than 1,000 students in 17 postgraduate and research programmes. Since then the university has always had unrest and problems. Media reports suggest that there are around 70 cases in the Kerala High Court related to the CUK regarding recruitment scam, partisan acts, anti-Dalit moves etc. Several petitions have reportedly been filed on cases of denial of reservation, suspension of teachers, denial of admission to PhD programme, denial of reservation for the differently-abled etc. The petitions hint towards the actions the University has taken against several teachers, students and staff at different times.

There have also been reports that a CBI inquiry has been requested into the recruitment scam that took place in the university five years back. The Pro Vice-Chancellor Dr K Jayaprasad is the vice-president of the Kerala chapter of the Bharatheeya Vichara Kendram. Srinagar: On Tuesday, January 9, Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) declared the result of students appeared in 10th class examinations. Over 62 percent students were declared successful.

She has qualified the 10th standard examinations and is looking forward to taking up medical subjects and become a doctor.

“She is very happy. She passed the exam despite taking help from a dictator. I have been receiving congratulatory calls since yesterday,” Insha’s father Mushtaq Ahmed Lone told TwoCircles.net over the phone.

“She is saying that she will take up medical subjects and work hard to become a doctor.”

Mushtaq further says that he will send her to Srinagar for further studies.

“I was at home when I was hit by hundreds of pellets, mostly on my face. They (pellets) even went inside my mouth,” Insha was quoted as saying in an Amnesty International report titled “Losing Sight in Kashmir” on the impact of pellet-firing guns. The report had also noted that many school and university students who had been hit in the eyes continue to have learning difficulties.

Insha was lauded by the former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah under whose regime the pellet guns were introduced in Kashmir and separatist leader Mirwaiz Umer Farooq.

Abdullah tweeted: “May Allah keep rewarding your hard work and efforts.”

Senior separatist leader Umer Farooq also tweeted: “Congratulations to brave Insha Mushtaq… Despite going through the trauma of losing her eyesight due to pellets, she has managed an amazing feat. Her determination and resilience is an example for everyone. May Allah bless her always!”
More than 200 people hit by pellets fired by security forces during street protests in 2016 lost their vision either permanently or partially.

The unrest began on July 8, 2016, when Hizbul commander Burhan Wani was killed by the security forces in Anantnag district.

On Thursday, thousands of people held a protest demonstration against the ongoing persecution and worst ever exodus of Rohingya Muslims and others in Myanmar.

Maulana Mahmood Madani, General Secretary of Jamiat Ulema-I-Hind, was leading the protest demonstration held under its Delhi chapter unit at Jantar Mantar near the Parliament House.

On this occasion, a memorandum was submitted to Secretary General of United Nation, Minister of Home Affairs, Government of India and to the Ambassador and Embassy of Myanmar at New Delhi.

While addressing the massive gathering, Maulana Mahmood Madani pressed upon the international community, especially the UN, to take practical action against the Myanmar Government instead of merely passing buck and condemnational statement. He urged the international community to impose economic blockade against the Myanmar, like it did in case of North Korea.

Maulana Madani also criticized the approach of the Indian Government towards the Rohingya refugee living in the country.

“May be Indian government, either due to its politics or cheap mentality or helplessness, is ready to defame India but Indian people cannot defame their country. India is known for standing with the oppressed but today it is with oppressors. It is condemnable,” he said.

Madani also said that the attitude of the Indian government is defaming our image among comity of the nations.

“On one hand, India aspires to become a permanent member of UN Security Council, but on the other hand, human blood is spilling over in the neighborhood and India is siding with oppressors. Then how such a country can become a member of the UN Security Council? ” asked Madani. “Is this the Vasudhaiva kutumbakam ( the whole world is one family)? Indian government must change its policy and protect the image of India.”

Leaders from other Muslim organizations including Navaid Hamid, President at All India Muslim Majlis-e -Mashawarat; Zafarul Islam Khan, Chairman at Delhi Minority Commission; Maulana Niaz Ahmad Faruqi, Maulana Abid Qasmi, Firoz Ahmad Bakht, Maulana Ali Hasan Gujarati, Maulana Raees Khan Noori were also present in the rally to raise their voice in favour of Rohingyas.

Ajmer : Dargah Dewan Syed Zainul Abedin Ali Khan at Dargah Ajmer Sharif has called for a beef ban across the country. He has claimed that Cows are a holy figure for Hindu brethren, therefore Muslims should refrain from eating cow meat. He has also said that the triple talaq practice is against Sharia.

Ajmer Sharif Dargah is considered as one of the largest shrines of the Muslim community in India where thousands of people from various countries including Pakistan, have gathered this time on the occasion of 805th Urs of Khwaja Moinuddin Hassan Chisti.

On the same occasion, Dewan Syed Zainul Abedin Ali Khan said, “Khwaja Moinuddin Hassan Chisty lived all his life for unity between Hindu and Muslim communities. Beef leads to division in the society. To stop that, we (Muslims) should stop eating beef to honour our Hindu brethren.”
Moreover, he said, “I would appeal for a countrywide ban on the beef.”

He said, “Our hindu brothers consider cow as their brother. And we should respect other religion as it is the core of Islam.”

Dargah Dewan also announced that he and his members are also giving up on the beef. “My family and I have taken a pledge on this day that we will never have beef for the rest of our lives. And we ask Muslims of India to give up on beef for the sake of unity and peace,” said Dewan.
Syed Zainul Abedin Ali Khan asked for the provision for punishment of those who could kill a cow and its various progenies.

Coming over to the controversy of Triple Talaq, Dargah Dewan said, “Triple talaq is not only irrelevant in these times, but also is against of Sharia. When Niqah is done with the consent of both the girl and the boy, there should be consent involved in the Talaq as well.” He also said that if families are present during Niqah, why should Triple Talaq be practiced in solicitation?

He said that couple should try to save the marriage until the last try possible and if Triple Talaq is necessary, one should keep the gap of at least one month between two ‘Talaqs’ said. “Such decisions should not be done in hurry or in anger,” he added. He also said that Triple Talaq is the non-Shariat practice which hurts the sentiments and self-confidence of Muslim women.
