Heroes of Mumbai, a wall painting project by Asian Paints and ST+art, is bringing some cheer amidst the gloom of the Covid-19 pandemic. As a part of this project, portraits of 28 corona warriors were painted on the walls of the Mahim Junction railway station in Mumbai. These include doctors, nurses, sanitation workers, delivery persons, vegetable vendors, police personnel and many others.
The project is an extension of St+art India Foundation’s Art Stations project where public transit spaces are being turned into walk-through art galleries. While the murals have been designed by Gujarat based artist Do, they have been painted by artist Musnir Bukhari.
According to an Asian Paints press release, “As one walks past the multi-hued facade, citizens are continually reminded that if not for the delivery staff that brings our essentials home, the sanitation worker who keeps the roads clean and the policeman untiringly ensuring that no one ventures out without a mask, we would not feel as safe and secure as we do.”
Explaining the rationale behind choosing the location, the release said, “The Mahim Junction railway station, which has in pre-lockdown times handled footfalls of close to two lakh people daily, is the ideal location to remind ourselves that we owe our sense of safety and security to hundreds of these selfless people.”
