In light of rising Covid-19 cases, senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 18, 2021 to declare a national health emergency. Sibal also urged the Election Commission to declare a moratorium on election rallies to counter measure the second wave of coronavirus.

Sibal tweeted, “COVID-19: Infections faster than recoveries; Modiji: Declare a National Health Emergency; Election Commission: Declare a moratorium on election rallies; Courts: Protect people’s lives.”

Earlier, former Prime Minister and current MP Manmohan Singh also wrote to PM Modi listing suggestions to ramp up the vaccination drive in the country.

Meanwhile, on Sunday India recorded a record single-day rise of 2,61,500 coronavirus cases, taking India’s total tally of Covid-19 cases to 1,47,88,109, cases while active cases surpassed the 18-lakh mark, as per updated Union Health Ministry data.
