Punjab goes to polls on 4 February as voters across the state remain angry against the ruling Akali-BJP alliance, which has governed the state for the last 10 years.
Corruption, criminalisation of politics and drugs are some of the key issues that are likely to influence the decisions of Punjab’s voters on Saturday.
Last week, Hindi news channel, Aaj Tak organised a debate show with live audience in Amritsar, where representatives from all key parties were invited. But, as the channel’s anchor, Anjana Om Kashyap, pointed out, the Akali Dal refused to send its representative allegedly to avoid embarrassing questions from the members of the live audience. Instead, a local BJP leader, Tarun Chugh, was sent to represent the alliance.
The video of Chugh’s heated argument with Kashyap has now gone viral on social media platforms. In the video, Chugh desperately seeks to evade a question from an elderly member of the audience, who accused the ruling alliance of causing ruins to an otherwise prosperous Punjab.
Faced with a tough questions, Chugh then calls the journalist moderating the debate a sympathiser of Aam Aadmi Party and Congress. These two parties are making a serious bid to wrest power from the Akali Dal and BJP in Punjab.
Chugh’s response clearly doesn’t go down well with the audience, who respond with loud boos and heckling.
