In the wake of the violence and genocide-like situation in Delhi, the Delhi Minorities Commission (DMC) has written to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Delhi (North East) to take stock of the matter and ensure peace in the areas of Maujpur, Karawal Nagar, Seelampur, Babarpur, Ghonda, Mustafabad, Gokalpuri, Jaffrabad and Ashok Nagar where violence has been raging for three days straight since February 24.
Peaceful anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protesters have been attacked by armed goons, apart from ordinary citizens. The rioters have assaulted people with sticks, stones and even used pistols in the presence of the Delhi police. Markets and shops have been set on fire, homes have been broken into and a number of people (17 as of today), including a policeman have been killed and over 60 persons have been injured.
In its letter, the Delhi Minorities Commission has directed the DCP North East to send more police enforcement in the affected areas, clamp Section 144 there till the situation becomes normal, safely escort people who wish to leave the area and escort the injured to the GTB Hospital in Shahdara.
The organization has further asked it to institute an inquiry in the matter, especially a report about what action had been taken against BJP leader Kapil Mishra who has issued violent threats and ultimatums to the Delhi police about clearing the roads of the mobs or he and his supporters would hit the streets and ensure so. The Commission observed that a police officer was standing next to Kapil Mishra when he said that he would wait until US President Donald Trump left the city, and wouldn’t listen to anyone, not even the police if the mobs weren’t cleared.
The DMC also questioned the DCP on what action was taken by the police to prevent the entry of armed rioters, the entry of dumpers carrying stones into the area and the efforts of the police to nab miscreants on the roads.
The DMC has asked the DCP to also apprise them of what actions have been taken to prevent the continuation and recurrence of violence including prevention of entry of armed outsiders into the affected areas and file the police department’s reply by March 6, 2020.
