Gurmehar Kaur's grandfather Kamaljit Kaur has come out strongly in support of came out to support of his granddaughter on Tuesday saying that whatever she did was for the betterment of the students and to stop any kind of violence against them on university campuses.

Speaking exclusively to CNN-News18, Kamaljit also asked the government "to stop inflaming the issue" adding that "they were not trying to cool down the issue".

"She said the correct thing. She didn't say anything against India or any political leader."

Meanwhile the Times of India has reported: Support from war veterans has started pouring in for LSR student Gurmehar Kaur whose social media campaign against ABVP drew a volley of hate messages on her Facebook account.

Punjab State Ex-Servicemen Welfare Association (Sewa) has stepped forward to fight a legal battle on her behalf. Other war veterans have also voiced their concerns against "rape threats" issued to the daughter of Kargil martyr Captain Mandeep Singh.

Col Kuldip Singh Grewal (retd), Sewa president, said they would fight for Kaur and see to it that a formal complaint against the hate messages is lodged. "We will make certain that the case is filed and taken to its logical conclusion," he said.

Supporting Gurmehar's view that "Pakistan didn't kill her father, the war did", Kamaljit asserted that the "circumstances were such that it happened". "Who should we blame for our son's martyrdom? He died in the war, who should we name?" he asked.

Kamaljit also said that his family was apprehensive about Gurmehar's security. When asked about the ever-growing debate on nationalism and the various interpretations of the term, Kamaljit said: "Punjabis live for the nation. Will they teach nationalism to us? We have lost our son; do we need to prove anything?"

Remembering his son as a braveheart, who died in the 1999 Kargil war, Kamaljit said, "My son killed 26 enemies before laying down his life”, adding that he was a brave beyond measure.
