The Uttar Pradesh (UP) Special Task Force (STF) has arrested Dr. Kafeel Khan from Mumbai for allegedly making ‘inflammatory statements’ at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in 2019.
An FIR was registered against him on December 13, 2019 for his allegedly inflammatory statements and for reportedly attempting to vitiate the peaceful atmosphere at the university and disturbing communal harmony during a protest at Bab e Syed gate.
According to the FIR, Kafeel, in his speech had said, “Mota Bhai is teaching everyone to become Hindu or Muslim but not a human being. He does not believe in the constitution since the RSS came into existence. The CAB makes Muslims a second category citizen and subsequently they will be harassed with the implementation of the NRC.”
The FIR also reported him to be saying, “This is fight is for our existence. We have to fight,” further adding that students in RSS schools were being taught that those who had beards were terrorists. He had also said that through the CAB, the government had told them that India was not their country, reported India Today.
He was in Mumbai to address a meeting against the CAA at the Arabia Hotel on Wednesday, January 29. He was supposed to attend the Mumbai Bagh protest which has entered its fourth day; an agitation inspired from the women-led protests at Shaheen Bagh in Delhi.
An official of the Mumbai Police told PTI, “Officials of the UP STF arrested Dr Kafeel Khan in a case which was registered at Civil Lines Police Station under section 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups) of IPC. Our police team helped our UP counterparts on their request.”
Two days after Dr. Kafeel Khan was booked for his speech in AMU, the university had a bloody encounter with the UP police on December 15, 2019 after its students had come out in support of the students of the Jamia Millia Islamia University who had become victims of a police attack in the wake of the anti-CAA protests.
Dr. Kafeel Khan, a pediatrician, had first come into the news during the controversy of the death of over 60 children at the BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur, UP in 2017 after he which he was suspended and jailed. However, in September 2019, the UP government had given him a clean chit in the matter.
