The Single-judge Bench of Justice Yogesh Khanna has issued a notice to the State in a plea filed by the grandfather of deceased Navreet Singh, who died on January 26, 2021 while participating in the farmers’ protest in New Delhi.
The plea before the court was to issue a direction for a court appointed and court monitored special investigation team comprising police officers with a “demonstrably impeccable record of professional integrity, honesty and efficiency” to carry out time bound investigation into the death of Navreet Singh.
The petitioner submitted before the High Court that he has a right to fair investigation and justice to ascertain the reason behind his grandson’s death. He also contended that though the police claim that Navreet died an accidental death, two eye witnesses have alleged that the cause of death was a bullet injury.
Advocate Vrinda Grover (appearing for the petitioner), apprised the court that “injuries number 1 to 4 as stated in the post mortem report could only be caused by a bullet and not by an accident”. She also argued that there are many CCTV cameras installed near or at the spot of the incident, especially at Andhra Education Society and though the DVRs of such CCTV cameras have been seized by the Delhi Police, “its footage have not been shared”.
However, the State submitted before the Delhi High Court that the Delhi Police has “no hesitation” in sharing information/documents/electronic evidence collected till date. The standing counsel for the State said that he would take specific instructions in this regard and file a status report.
The matter is slated for hearing on February 26, 2021.
