Insulted by Maharashtra Governor’s no-show on January 25, 2021 when the Sanyukta Shetkari Kamgar Morcha (SSKM) was to submit a memorandum to the state government, farmer leaders resolved to tear up the state at Azad Maidan.
On Monday evening, farmer leaders discovered that Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari had left for Goa despite setting aside time for the farmer leaders beforehand. 23 leaders who visited Raj Bhawan after a mammoth procession was stopped near Metro Cinema in the city said the move was “an insult to farmers.”
Refusing to meet other officials at Raj Bhawan, farmer leaders returned to Azad Maidan where a public meeting was held in the afternoon and tore the document in front of protesters.
As many as 15,000 farmers outside of Mumbai and more peasants, who were stopped by city police at the Metro junction, observed a sit-in protest. The news agitated protesters who beat drums and sloganeered in protest.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Chief and former Chief Minister Sharad Pawar condemned Koshyari for avoiding the peasants’ march.
“Maharashtra has never seen such a Governor before. He has the time to meet Kangana (Ranaut) but not the farmers. It was the moral responsibility of the Governor to come here,” Pawar told news agencies.
On January 26, Mumbai farmers will conclude their agitation by hoisting the national flag, singing the national anthem and taking a pledge to make the peasants’ struggle in India a grand success.
