Gujarat High Court directs Central Jail to submit report on Babu Bajrangi’s living condition by Monday

The Gujarat High Court today directed the superintendent of Sabarmati Central Jail to submit a report on how former Bajrang Dal leader Babu Bajrangi lives in the prison.

The direction was given by a division bench of justices Harsha Devani and A S Supehia while hearing Bajrangi’s regular bail plea.

The court asked the jail superintendent to file a report on Monday on how Bajrangi, a convict serving life sentence till death in 2002 Naroda Patiya massacre case, lives in jail.

Bajrangi had pleaded for regular bail on the ground that he has turned completely blind, his health condition is further deteriorating and he is hard of hearing in one ear.

The court asked the jail superintendent to reply as to who takes care of Bajrangi given that he has turned blind and partially deaf, and how he maintains his daily routine.

To support claims of his deteriorating health condition, Bajrangi has also produced before the court medical certificates from a government hospital.

Since his sentence in 2012, Bajrangi has been out on temporary bail several times mainly on health reasons.

A special court had in August 2012 sentenced Bajrangi to life imprisonment till death in the Naroda Patiya massacre case in which 97 people were killed.

The same court had sentenced former minister Maya Kodnani to 28 years jail.

The same bench of the high court is also in the process of hearing a petition moved by 31 convicts including Bajrangi and Kodnani in Naroda Patiya massacre case, challenging SIT court order which had sentenced all of them to life imprisonment.
