As gunshots ring out, a family, including young children scrambles for cover, and men in uniform are seen taking position, even as firing continues. Scenes that could be from a yet to be released gritty film of a city’s underbelly. Instead this was a shootout inside the premises of a busy court in Delhi.
Three people have been reportedly killed including Gangster Jitender Gogi, who was being produced in court. According to news reports, Gogi was shot dead by members of a rival gang who had barged into the hearing “dressed as lawyers” and opened fire. It has been reported that a judge, lawyers and many others were also present in the courtroom when the gunshots were fired.
Soon vidoes began circulating, showing some clips of “security personnel escorting Gogi” shooting back at the attackers, who were not seen in the visuals. In other clips only gunshots can be heard and muffled voices of people in the vicinity urging everyone to move to safety. Soon gory images of three men lying dead in pools of blood also began circulating.
According to a report by NDTV, Gogi was shot thrice before “security personnel shot the gunmen dead”. The injured were rushed to hospital and “among them is a woman lawyer present in the courtroom,” stated the news report. The Delhi Police have claimed that those shot dead are gangsters who were killed “in immediate counterfire by Police as they opened fire in lawyers attire at a gangster”.
According to the police, this shooting is the result of the ongoing rivalry “Jitender Gogi’s gang and the rival “Tillu gang”. NDTV quoted Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana saying that this was “not a gang war,” as the two men dressed as lawyers who opened fire at Jitender Gogi inside the court were killed when “police retaliated”. He added that the police had acted swiftly.

However, questions are being raised on the security lapse at the courtrooms and how did anyone manage to go past the security check and metal detectors with weapons.
